The grass is greener, get the F out of your home state thread

Really zeroing in on Wyoming. Closest to a true Constitutional carry State as I can find in the area. (MT is sort of a fake Const. Carry State and the housing market is really getting out of hand there)

I've had some very promising second interviews in Southern WY. Very exciting times.
Wyoming doesn’t have just ONE major city where the majority of the population lives and mandates what the rest do.
Instead they have moderate size cities scattered about. I like it!

They have a really good Pizza Hut in Cody. Tasted like Pizza Hut did 20 years ago. Ate there last year.

If I were to move to Wyoming, I'd stay as far away from Jackson as possible! Was NOT impressed, looked like a mini-Vegas. Wyoming is a beautiful state, why live in Jackson?

My wife likes the area, likes the Tetons, likes the hiking, skiing, and the outdoor activities. We won't live in Jackson, we will shoot to live near there (as the budget allows).

Just remember that those Tetons belong to my wife! If you don't believe me, just ask her! ;)

well, it looks like I may be joining the club. Not really moving out of my home state, but moving back to it.

We've been in Colorado for 5 years now. The outdoors is amazing, particularly in summer. We live in the most awesome place I've ever lived, and may ever live, but we have no family here. We haven't had a weekend away without kids since August 2019, and the only way we swung that was to take the kids and drop them off with their grandparents outside Oklahoma City. Obviously that's not something you do for a weekend so it pretty much only happens for a real vacation. After 5 years of playing stay-at-home-mom with no grandparents nearby, she's had her fill and is ready to get out and work...which will be easier with the flexibility of grandparents nearby, and a lower cost of living if she decides to go to school and we have to pay for childcare for our 3 year old.

I also recognize that my parents aren't getting any younger, and I haven't lived within 150 miles of my parents or brother in 15 years. My 2 boys have cousins and grandparents they barely know because they seem them for a few days at a time, a couple of times per year.

Lastly, I'm not liking the hard left Colorado has been taking over the past few elections or the complete lack of resistance the rural right is able to exercise against the urban left doing whatever the hell they want when it comes to things like gun laws. The state as a whole recently voted to re-introduce gray wolves to a part of the state that is dominated by ranchers that voted heavily against it, but were outnumbered by densely populated counties that will be unimpacted and have no perspective on what it means to do such a thing . The legislature is working to pass a new law requiring firearms to be locked up when not in use, effectively removing them as a tool for home defense. We have pretty reasonable taxes right now (I will actually be paying more in both income and property tax in Oklahoma) but I have to imagine it's only a matter of time before it turns into a high tax state.

Hopefully we can make enough on this house to set aside some extra to buy a little patch of land in the mountains that I can build a primitive cabin on to come back and visit regularly without having to book a vrbo months in advance or haul a camper.

I hope the move is seamless and easy for you. I've been interviewing like crazy in WY and MT. Going up there next week with the family to explore. Of course, there is that super storm that you're probably dealing with now that's going to kill our drive through Eastern WY.

Thanks, and best of luck with the interviewing. I don't think our move would even be on the table if there was a job component. I work from home, for a company based in Oklahoma, so I'll actually be moving closer and be in the office a little more. The additional presence and visibility can't hurt from a career standpoint.

The family and I just got back from an extensive 9 day trip exploring Montana by vehicle. We couldn't make it into Wyoming due to the super storm that came up through Colorado.

I must say I was in awe. The people were super friendly nearly everywhere we went. There were for sure some small towns that had a few questionable characters. But, over all, it was a very pleasant trip. We came up the 15 and all around the West side. Then back South and East to Billings. Then back South into Yellowstone. I visited a great great uncles' grave in Libby and was a bit disappointed in that town to be honest. Billings was a little disappointing too as it was pretty damn industrial. Like the Bakersfield of MT, if that makes sense. Missoula was super fun and we hit a few really good breweries there. Though I defiantly got the SJW vibe there, though. Maybe because it's a University town? Big Sky and the 191 area was incredible. As was the Flathead lake area. It's a shame the pay for jobs out there is absolute crap. Thompson Falls was cute but hodunk.

I'm really sad we couldn't make it to Wyoming but our planned route was impossible due to road closures. (We did make it technically while on the 191) The only active snow we went though was in through Utah and Idaho on the way up.

Overall, we logged 3400 miles of driving.

I've got the wife convinced now.

My next door neighbor grew up in MT. His parents still live there near flathead lake area.

Neighbor wants to move back. We were supposed to go two summer back but plans failed.

I know I’d love it. But the jobs suck. It’s a state where you are poor or bring money with you.

And property is expensive now.

His parent leave 5 months out of the year to avoid the harsh winter and plowing roads all the time.

Not to piss on your quest, not my point! Just lots to consider to move there. And....if you want advice on areas and where to look, I can give you his number and he’s be happy to help out and give advice.

I don't mind the cold. The plowing would suck, though. Not to mention a lot of areas are just boarded up during the winter. People suck so I wouldn't mind the empty winters either. Rent and housing costs were pretty high in the areas that interested us the most; of course. Ask your buddy about Billings. Specifically, Laurel. I have a job offer there that pays nearly the same as I'm getting out here but my brief stay there didn't impress me. Maybe I'm missing something.

Cursorary City and County job search indicates most LE patrol positions pay $15-$22. P.O.S.T. not typically required. Not like I'd get back into that scene even if it paid better.

One State I had ZERO interest in was Idaho. Most of the people there were rude. The museum in Idaho Falls had a 'white people suck' section, too.

Missoula is beautiful. But its *is* a college town. Which means its grossly overpriced.
We met a really nice couple with their kids there at a brewery who is from ND but have a vacation cabin in Whitefish. Everything there (propertywise) was way overpriced. But, the culture was varied and the people were nice.

I’ll ask. His parent rolled their fiver in today and we chat often.

LE patrol...yeah I left $45 an hour. NO way I’d it for half, even in a rural area as you still deal with the meth and DV shit. I’d rather deal with gangs.

Yeah, I’m with you. Idaho is done. It’s part of CA, OR, and WA at this point.

Montana’s the same but I’ll get you the info. 👍

I like Kalispell and Whitefish, and I would love to be near Glacier. But, we like Wyoming and southern Utah more (wife and I like to hike), they seem like better options for us.
We stayed in Kalispell. Whitefish is beautiful. Not so good for hiking?
