Best TJ Features

Ya'll wonder why this shit matters to me. Someone once upon a time was visiting and dumped 5 kegs of 5 1/2" long 1/2-13 Socket Head Cap Screws off in my driveway. WTF am I going to do with those? Maybe you can use them? Yeah, maybe a handful in a lifetime if I am lucky. Why do you have them? Well, I was trying to order Hex Head Cap Screws for body lifts. I left out the "head" part because I didn't think it mattered that much. Oh, so you ordered hex cap screws and left whether you needed Hex Head or Hex Socket up to the discretion of the vendor? Yep, now I have all these fucking Socket Head Cap Screws that I don't need. Well, just return them. Nope, not gonna embarrass myself.

I finally traded them to the local fastener supplier for something I actually have a use for.

Well if I ever meet ya I can say well there is that one guy who 😂
And if you ask me for a flat head screwdriver I just stand there and stare at you until you figure it out.

My packaging guy is the fucking worst at communicating. I have to check every brake kit before it goes in the box so I know it is right because he fucked a few of them up. That can't happen. He stages the parts and then is supposed to tell me he needs it checked.

For reasons I have yet to fathom, he does every and anything but say "I need you to check a big brake kit".

He will be walking by pushing a cart that rattles so much all I get is "brrkatit". What? Brake Kit. What about it? 16" check. What about a 16" check? Can you check a 16" brake kit? Yes, I am more than able to check one. Blank stare.

Do you need something? Yes, I need you to check a 16" brake kit. Perfect, I'll be right there.

I have explained that I understand simple English, just tell me what you need. To date he has managed to come up with 20 variations that have very little to do with actually telling me what he needs and usually uttered at low volume while doing something else when I am wadded up under a rig with about a .01% chance of deciphering his gibberish.

I got even.

I went to get a rotor for machining and test fit on a hub conversion. The rotor in the box was not anything resembling what was supposed to be in the box. I found the number on the rotor, wrote it on a slip of paper and stuck it on the outside of the box after I laid it on the packaging table.

He found it and set it to the side. I put it back in front of him and pointed at the number and said it was wrong.

He didn't understand. The number is wrong Pat. I opened the box and show him the rotor. Then I showed him the number on the rotor. See Pat, its wrong.

Where did you get it? I got it with the other rotors. Its wrong.

By now he is thinking he fucked up somehow and I'm not going to do a damn thing to let him off the hook.

Pat, the rotor is wrong so he goes and grabs two more off the shelf, opens them up and tells me they have the right number on them and they match the box. See, I told you it was wrong.

But those two are the same, why are they wrong? They aren't wrong, they match the number on the box and then I walked away.

The next day he stops me and says it was really frustrating trying to figure out what I was talking about and what I needed him to do.

That's right Pat, because I used your method of communication. I left notes you didn't understand. I explained the problem in a way that will never help you to figure out what I needed and right when you were the most confused, I walked away and left you to figure it out.

It only takes a simple sentence Pat. Pat, I found a rotor box from Centric with the wrong part in it, check the rest of that part number to see how many more are fucked up.

Bam, now you know what to do, you know what the problem is, and you know how to fix it. One fucking sentence that I know you understand because I was standing right in front of you and saw the fucking lightbulb turn on. Try it some time.

Flat blade, standard, slotted but I call it flat head like everyone else I know.
A flat head usually requires more work than a hex, button or cap type. Most need a 82º countersink (some call it a 41º included) to get the flat head to seat "flat".

It lets me express my 'natural ruggedness' . . . . you know, four day stubble, everything plaid - shirt - pants - underwear - tattoos - thought process. It attracts plaid women.
It has lots of room on the hood for multiple 'Hi-Lift' jack mounting, and lots of room in the back for the hundreds of shackles that I like. The shackles are plaid of course.
The list is long . . . . there's plaid packages at the door. 🇨🇦🇺🇸🧔

Why have OBD II and no power windows??

I tapped into a few wires that caused a cascade of multi month fun. Some still ongoing.

Outboarding is a a peach compared to this trick:

Look closely.
DSC_4174.webp

1. Short wheelbase - less bottoming out and high centering
2. Approach and departure angles are pretty great
3. Carries its own larger spare tire externally without much trouble
4. Gigantic aftermarket support
5. Doors and tops come off, easily
6. Coil springs - so much better than the YJ!
7. Manual transmission
8. Possibly the best updating of a classic body style of any vehicle
9. An engine that embodies the phrase: "if you're gonna be dumb, you better be tough"
10. Fenders that work with or are easily modified for larger tires
11. Cheap replacement parts and a simple design for DIY mechanics
12. Round headlights!
13. It's basically a blank canvas to customize
Number 12 especially. The 87-95 lost decade of square headlights shall never be repeated.

Number 12 especially. The 87-95 lost decade of square headlights shall never be repeated.
87-95 YJ, still responsible after all these years for creating generation after generation of geometrically challenged individuals who failed to pay attention in basic math. They do not have square headlights and never have.

I get it. But it's habit. Like how we owned a Skil brand electric hand saw for 25 years so to everyone in the family you asked for the skil saw and you knew.

And like how I grew up 15 miles from the factory where old man Peterson invented and manufactured the Vise-Grip. So every other locking pliers is a cheap POS Chinese counterfeit knockoff. And I'll always call mine Vise-Grips because I got them as factory rejects when I worked there over the summers.

I'll still call it a flat head screwdriver driver out of habit. Because I'm older and done that for decades.

SCARY! Looks great but the poor guy who installed it is probably still curled up in a corner saying things like "Green wire data, no light green data"
Nope, my wiring guy is better at what he does than I am at what I do. We did an auto to manual swap in an 05 with a non 05 trans using a conversion bellhousing. We didn't swap in a new harness. Get it all done and go to fire it up, wouldn't turn over. Helper snags a Service Manual, looks at the wiring diagrams for a couple of minutes. Grabs a chunk of wire, hooks it to something under the dash, pulls the PCM connector apart, adds a pin, puts it all back together and it fired right up. Took him maybe 20 minutes all in to figure out and fix the problem.

Shit, I don’t believe I got it wrong... a square is a rectangle, not the other way... been a long day!
Lest we overlook the obvious, if you lay down a rectangular piece of paper and a square piece of paper in front of any 3rd grader, they know the difference which makes any adult trying to argue to the contrary a dirtbag by definition.

On topic, I love how snappy the TJ drives and handles. The JT is great for what we bought it for (everyday driving, entire family comfort, camping, hauling), but wife and I still battle over who gets to drive the TJ.

This thread is the diametric opposite of a current thread that points out the TJs flaws.

What do you see as its strong points?

Heres my take-

A timeless body style. It embodies the best elements of most all previous models.

A more protective roll cage that looks good and serves other purposes (speakers, lights, grab handles)

The best soft top systems ever.

An easier to access area behind the back seat.

Good seats. Pre ‘03 are great seats.

Great highway manners. Granted this normally is tossed out the window with bad lifts and other mods.

Simplicity- while they are far more complex than their predecessors, the TJ is basic by modern vehicle standards.

Affordable parts. A mirror for my F250 is 1400.00. a TJ mirror can be had for about 60 bucks.

Agile and Maneuverible. No question on this.

Capable. Rubicon=Extremely Capable.

The half door option

Mechanically Sound - it really doesn’t win awards for its’ output numbers or transmission performance, but if you take off into the wild in one with other comparable vehicles following you, the TJ will most likely go the farthest and be the hardest to kill.

Good cabin comfort- this is a given to most owners, but for everyone that had CJ’s and had to give your date a blanket, you know what I’m talking about.

Love to hear more from you guys.
My pup luvs it

i’m surprised jeep even thought of reusing that feature very rarely do i see anyone do it!
My brother had a CJ7 and we use to lay down the window down and drive slow down dirt roads in Arizona and hunt rattle snakes, fun times.

I've never laid my TJ window down probably due to its a big part of the OEM roll cage system, but I will never say never and I'm sure my son would get a kick out of putting the front window down and doing some dirt roads and keep the speed down.

I'd really love to do it sometime, only going slowly, but I saw it could mess up the seals and never be right afterwards so I've been worried to do it. Not sure how true that is, but since my jeep never has any leaks or anything I don't want to mess with it
