TJ Fest 2021 - Moab (April 24 – May 1, 2021)

Test result came back... COVID positive 🤦🏻

It absolutely kills me to say it, but it looks like I am going to be sitting this one out. While I have no doubt I’ll recover just fine, the last thing I want to do is get someone else sick. I’ve always felt this COVID was way overblown, but even if this was just the regular flu I still wouldn’t be going around other people as I don’t want to spread nasty crap to others.

Of all the bad luck and piss poor timing for things, this has to be the worst of the worst.

I could probably drive up to catch the last day or two of the event, but an 8 hour drive each way for a day or two simply doesn’t make much sense.

I guess there’s always next year, and in the meantime I’ll organize plenty of local wheeling day trips.

Don’t have too much fun without me 😐
Correct:Timing sucks, bum deal. But solid call on your part. Hate to hear it

Weather forced us off Harley plan but in route

My favorite spot to overnight. Nobody there.

These are my copied settings from @Dino - KX6D for CHIRP. Here's how I would suggest anyone use them, which should be radio independent (e.g. you should be good to follow this with any radio Chirp supports, but of course use at your own risk).

First, be sure to have some type of programming cable (I went cheap and have done my radios a few dozen times now, but Dino recommends another that I am not seeing right now).

1. Download/Install Chirp
2. Open Chirp
3. Connect your radio
4. In the top menu, select "Radio" and then "Download From Radio" - this is your old config but also tells CHIRP the protocol.
5. In Chirp, select "File" then "Open", select the image that you downloaded from here. Note that I have a few different ones there (one is Dino's, one is the one I will be running more targeted to what I do, and the last is the UV-5R stock configuration), select whichever you want.
6. Click the new tab that opened (it will be named similarly to the file you used). Click the first row, scroll to the bottom and hold shift while you click the last row. Copy the rows (Control+C on windows/linux, Command+C on mac), or right click and select "copy"
7. Go back to your radio import from step 4, click the top row and paste (Control/Command+V, or right click and select "paste").
8. In the top menu select "File" then "Save As" and name it something else to keep your original download safe.
9. Now upload the programming to your radio! In the top menu select "Radio" and then "Upload To Radio", follow the prompts, and once you see the radio reboot - you should be good to go.

You may want to fiddle with the settings if you don't like things like auto-locking the keys and seeing the channel names in the channel mode. Those options are the second item down on the left side next to the spreadsheet.

In the case you have your HAM license, you can enable the few channels that have the "Duplex" column set to "off" and move it to "none".
Thanks for this. With this information I was able to get my radio programmed for the TJfest.

Wow... Driving up HWY 550 north of ABQ was amazing. Never seen anything like it. Then again, crawfish ponds and sugarcane fields don’t set too high of a bar for scenery. I’ve gotta get out of Louisiana!

BTW I am still in need of some shock relocation brackets, if you got some, bring em please! Would be a life saver!

I threw mine out when I cut my spring seats, how close are your shocks? Could you get by with a trim if anyone brought a grinder? (I didn’t, but tossing another idea out).

Why the hell didn’t you bring a few sacks of crawfish for an official boil at the unofficial event!!!!

I tried to clearance one side before I left home. I cut out a good bit of material but still couldn’t get the shock to clear so I gave up on that. Any more and it would’ve hit the brake line instead of the perch. I think I will go to Dixie 4wd tomorrow morning and find some shaft-down shocks. Otherwise I’ll probably have to wait till at least Monday for someone to weld some brackets on.

For whatever reason, I could not get my hands on shock relocation brackets. 4wp in ABQ doesn’t carry them, Dixie doesn’t carry them, I found some on Marketplace and almost got the seller to overnight them to Moab, but that fell through. Amazon won’t ship them next day to Moab. I’ll figure something out 🙂

@TJTurley I am not sure when Dino is in town, but if you use a radio supported by CHIRP (including a UV-5R) I can do it - I am at the hyatt (just a little north of downtown) and could do it. I believe I copied his settings correctly - so there's a small caveat there!

Oh, and my cable is this one, so your radio would need this connector:

Damnit @SecondChanceTJ - please stop at somewhere and get a picture with a shitload of crawfish. I’ll cover the cost.
I imagine I’d have a hard time finding crawfish in NM... at least the kind you would trust and eat

Being from LA, this whole low humidity thing is new to me. It feels like someone put a cold air intake on my nose...

We made it from florida! If anyone is meeting up tomorrow or sunday before the dinner & would like some tag-a-longs, please let us know. We get our jeep in the am and may take a drive up 128 and have lunch at Sorrel Ranch or Red cliffs tomorrow.
