First, and I’m close to this situation, I’m glad it wasn’t catastrophic.

Secondly, does anyone on here have a feel for what did this in a seemingly well cared for rig...I know it didn’t happen on this guys watch. And never willl.

Having had 7 or 8 4.0 engines, I’m at a loss for words. They are like cockroaches, they are hard to get rid of.

Yessir, other option, ATK, about $600 cheaper, but this guy is supposed to be good, and meticulous, and will only put the best parts in it. Boys, the wife ain't happy!
You need to learn the fine art of relativity in relationships...Once I drug home a 4th one with a V-8 and 35 inch tires she completely forgot about the 30 grand I blew on the first one.

You need to scale up.

It's just the opposite here.... I keep dragging home Jeeps and the FedEx truck keeps bringing me parts and mods and HE gets upset about it. 😂
But hey, we're not married, I'm retired, it's 100% my money I'm spending, and I contribute half to the living expenses. So I don't see myself stopping anytime soon 😁

Is that the upper bearing half with the copper showing through? If so I would say it may have been damage from detonation. It will hammer the tops of bearings like that.

I'm glad it wasn't catastrophic either. From what I've seen so far, it could've been.

It's hard to say, but...

How many miles on it?
Was the correct oil used and changed regularly?
Was it run with a misfire condition for an extended period?
Was it run under or over 200-220 degrees for an extended period?

We have no idea, bought it from a P.O, who bought it from a P.O. mechanic and I both believe it is the result of cheap oils, and poor maintenance. I've been restoring it for a year, and now this. The last thing I was worried about was the 4.0 on a never wrecked, rust free TJ. It'll get only the best of care and fluids from now on!
