Has the TJ reached classic car level?

So I think when the hype of the TJ slowly dies down again I wanna stock up on them and hold onto them because they’re truly a masterpiece in my eye. I could live the rest of my life just driving TJs and be completely content with it.
The hype isn't going to die off, the shortage and prices aren't going to get better, the time to stock up is now.



Maybe if a person lives in Arizona or something they might laugh at the idea that TJ's are a classic. All kinds of older vehicles rolling down the road there. But for those of us in upstate New York and the salt belt in general things were already fairly bad before covid. Now it's unbearable. I was going to sell my TJ side project and look for another Tj that was cleaner. Now it doesn't make any sense to sell. Might as well hold onto my rust buckets and get them cleaned up and save major $$$
 
I'd agree that good to great condition, well optioned TJ's are stable to increasing in value. I found a lucky deal in the first month of Covid when the world was falling apart and got my clean 06 TJ Rubi with 34k miles from Florida for only $12,800. I bet I could make a quick sale at $20k, maybe more.
 
Like virtually ALL things with wheels, the less you've tinker-fucked with it from its stock configuration, the more desirable it will be to a much wider audience. By default, this will make largely "Stone Stock" TJ's much more in demand, due to the fact that EVERY swingin' dick thinks THEIR mods are the BEST mods...

I always laugh when I see guys that on the ONE hand think their modded Jeep is worth a bubillion dollars - then after it languishes on whatever FS Forum they've chosen to try to quit themselves of same, they settle for 1/2 to 2/3's of what they THOUGHT it was worth. These same guys, when they go to replace the monstrosity that they overbuilt, look for...wait for it...AS Stone Stock a TJ as they can find...

Good point, I looked for a stock jeep so I could build it from there. I would guess with the Jeep and modifications, I am in about $20K. I doubt I could get close to that if I were to try and sell it. Now that I know more about the effort and cost to modify, I would look for a Jeep with decent modifications because I know it would be cheaper than building to that point myself. I could modify from there and end up with a more modified Jeep at the same cost. I would just need to be very thourough while inspecting it be be prepared for some surprises, but is not a bad way to go.
 
I have mine insured by Hagerty, and they think it is a classic.

I plan on keeping on mine pretty much stock just doing things to increase the drivability. It’s good for value and for me.

The market for certain things is crazy right now. Like the nada trade in for my pickup, I barely paid more than that for it brand new. Now 4 years and 130k miles later they’re saying it’s worth that.. I’m seriously thinking of selling.

What kind of truck with 130,000 miles is worth over $62k? My neighbor did sell his 2014 Raptor this morning for $10K more than he paid 1 year ago.

Go price any 3/4ton and up diesel right now. It’s ridiculous. If I didn’t need mine I’d be down to a half ton in a heartbeat. But to answer your question. I drive an F250 diesel pickup

I've got a 2015 half ton, I've been planning on a new 2022 GMC Sierra but if prices are like that I will wait.

Definition of a Custom or Antique Vehicle in Florida​

Prior to registering an antique car or a custom-built vehicle in Florida, motorists are encouraged to get familiar with the difference between these types of vehicles and the specific requirements that they must satisfy.

Licensed Florida drivers can apply for an FL antique vehicle registration and special vintage license plates if the car they own is for private use, is at least 30 years old and has been manufactured after 1945. Vehicles that are used for private purposes and manufactured in 1945 or in the previous years will be considered ancient vehicles.

Owners of ancient vehicles may obtain special horseless carriage license plates. Custom car registrations, on the other hand, are needed for vehicles 25 years old or more and date from the years after 1948, or for cars that were manufactured with the purpose to resemble such vehicles.

Drivers may also apply for a custom vehicle registration when they own street rods. A street rod is a car from the year 1948 or older or manufactured in order to look like the vehicles from that age. Both the custom vehicles and the street rods may be modified from the original model and may have a body re-manufactured from non-original materials.

This is the main characteristic that differentiates custom-built cars from antique vehicles.

People cant travel so they are buying 4x4,s to travel local and camp.
In Australia TJ,s have doubled in price in the past 8 months, its supply and demand, Jeeps are popular 4x4,s in US so they are getting purchased more than normal, demand raises the price, in Australia you cant buy a Toyota 4x4 unless you are first at the door with cash, same with most 4x4,s at the moment.
TJ prices will go lower again as Gas prises rise, In Australia Gas prises during Covid have been the lowest prices for years along with massive government cash handouts to stimulate the economy but now petrol started to go back up I have noticed more TJ,s up for sale.

I'd love a 79 series.

I know many of us would like to think they are- here is where the TJ stands-
And remember, many “classic cars” aren’t even classic.

The TJ and LJ Rubicon , in stock form and factory paint, are collectible to some and very sought after...our jeep specialty dealer has them come in and they are gone immediately. They are to a Jeep afficionado the equivalent of a 1970 Super Sport Chevelle. To those in the know these are the most capable vehicles ever sold to the public. And nice 4.0 Tj s are selling very well too.

The TJ embodies a classic body style, but it was gifted that by designers who knew what was classic to Jeep owners.

To the JK crowd the TJ is the poorer guys’ jeep, the starter kit....and to the TJ guy the JK guys only think they can go where he does.

I dont know if it is destined to become a true classic , but right now it already is to some.

It’s also a little hard to distinguish, because a jeep is so fun, so loved, everyone wants one it seems.

I do know the TJ is the best value in an off road vehicle, by far...capability for the dollar.

It is the only vehicle I’ve ever owned that people walked up and said “how much ?”
