What did you do to your TJ today?

Pulled the front axle and brought it to a friend to rebuild. Arb locker, 4.56 yukon gears, chromoly axle shafts. It’s been a long time since I messed with a differential, so I know enough to know what I don’t know. Should get it back Monday or Tuesday.

You have my respect. I learned the hard way. Smart guy.

I had a ‘66 VW that looked like this. I wanted to either make it into a dune buggy or cut it up & turn it into a Baja Bug. The problem was that it wasn’t suitable for that. It needed another engine rebuild, brakes, shocks, tires, ball joints & more, but the body was perfect. ‘Beautiful, in fact. I just went ahead & sold it.

Seems like a lot of work when a simple paper towel will get the oil off your hand after you remove the plug.
I have a pan under the oil filter and spin it off till it starts running out and stop. The oil doesn’t touch anything on the way down, straight down to the pan, no mess there. When it stops dripping I spin it off the rest it the way and make sure I keep it open side up, again no mess. 🤷
Oil pan drain, I get a little on my fingers. Overall the TJ is probably the easiest and cleanest vehicle I’ve changed oil on.

@John Cooper...This was actually a pretty technical climb for a non-locked TJ
Looks like @John Cooper is running doorless again..

I use a trick I stole from someone else on this forum. Use a plastic grocery bag, and place it over the filter after loosening it slightly. Then, unscrew the filter through the bag and drop it right into the bag. Takes a bit of practice, but after a couple times, I can now get the mess all in the bag and none on the driveway.
I did this last change didnt spill a drop! unlike my first change where the filter oil dropped into my socket set I had pushed to one side away from the drain plug :(

Replaced my fan clutch, holy shit my fan is so much quieter now. It no longer sounds like a 747 taking off at 2500 rpm, I had no idea what I was missing.

I used a trick that @AMS417 posted a while ago to hold the pulley using a ratchet strap tied to the frame since I didn’t have a strap wrench and it worked pretty well.

I also almost had a bad time installing the new clutch because apparently the 18 ft lbs was too little for my torque wrench to pick up on and I must have over tightened the bolts because 2 snapped inside. Luckily the easy outs worked like they were supposed to for once (probably helps that it was brand new and not rusty).

Now I have to get used to this new absence of noise, it feels weird because I was used to shifting based on the noise of the fan and it’s hard to hear now. Might just need to get an exhaust to “help me shift better” 😉

Awesome! One of my favorite places to ride. I had to work or I probably would have tagged along.

You don’t have to be technical if you drive like @John Cooper .. he just kept pushing down the long pedal hard!!!🤣

MBRP cat back. Nice and throaty without being obnoxious.

I’ll look into that one, that’s definitely what I’m looking at. My friend had a truck with a loud exhaust that sounds nice, but I would hate being that asshole with the loud exhaust driving around
I've had loud a few times in my life but I'm over it now. This MBRP is nowhere close to the obnoxious loud I've run before. My cj5 w/350 and fenderwell headers hooked straight into purple hornys. That could be heard a mile away.

Replaced the motor mounts with new Mopar mounts. finally solved the mystery of shimmying vibration on the highway, had always thought it was a bent axle or warped rim. Never would have thought it was the motor mounts.

Passenger side lower nut was a pain in the ass, couldn't get the correct angle with a wobble or swivel extension due to the engine side of the mounts bolt head in the way and the exhaust.
As for the drivers side..... id like to have a talk with the asshole that decided to put the bolt through the direction they did, the ac compressor piping left no room for removal of the bolt, had to loosen the lower engine bracket enough to angle the damn thing sideways to pull the bolt out.

I have no clue how I got my passenger side lower nut off, but when I installed it I couldn’t fit a socket up there or anything. I was able to get it tight enough I think but wasn’t able to torque it down properly because of everything interfering
