Picking up where I left off

Yep, this crossed my mind as well at one point. Of course with my luck the carb would be a pain in the butt to constantly be messing with.

Best one I have found is the Magnum Powers unit. You can produce some pretty good horsepower with it, but the issue is that it isn’t anywhere close to being a “kit”. There’s a lot that will be left to the customer to figure out such as the cooling system, need for a new, aftermarket radiator, where to mount the intercooler (which is water to air fortunately).

At the end of the day though if you’re going through all this work, a turbo would be the better option as it’s going to be more efficient than a supercharger and then some.

I am not a fan of the Split Second piggyback controller and 7th injector that so many like to use.
Get a hold of Banks and work with them to bring back the turbo kit. Tell them you have a whole forum that wants one. Eddie Oh could do it.

I wouldn't run a carb. Holly (and others) make a self learning TBI setup now. It's about 1100 dollars, drops right onto a four barrel manifold, and gives you the reliability of FI without the headaches of modern engine control. Or so days the marketing. I'm looking into it for my motorhome.

That’s very cool! I guess things have changed a lot since the old days!

I think you have to account for the fact that time equals money. Like Blaine said, if most of these guys spend a year or so trying to get every little issue ironed out, then all that time they spent has some sort of monetary value.

But yes, I am sure it can be done for less.

Clearly I have a lot of pondering to do.
Have you seen my paycheck? It’s in the pre Covid $8.50 per hour range. I can do a lot of tinkering on my wage.

Please consider when making a decision what engine or modifications to make consider and think torque far before horsepower.

It all comes down to the amount of time, effort, and money to do an engine swap. With my SWB TJ and the mid-arm, I would likely run into a host of issues with a V8 swap. Not to mention here in the desert the cooling system could be a big issue as well. I seem to hear a lot of stories about V8 swaps overheating.

Thanks for the good wishes by the way!
Chris ,You know after reading this thread maybe the situation needs a fresh approach.
Maybe it would be easier to start with a Gen 3 powered Chevy extended cab, and shorten the WB to put the rear axle right behind the cab.ditch the bed. Then have Blaine build a semi blank sheet suspension to meet the objectives. Make a " Jeep" look front clip to finish it off.
I know this sounds stupid, but at what point is a TJ modded to the point it's not a Jeep anymore?
Maybe a linked , V-8 CJ-6 with all the mods could work also.

This might sound like I'm being a dick, but the best solution to all this is to accept the TJ 4.0 power your have and enjoy the
stellar suspension mods Blaine built!
After all think of the guys that had a 60 H.p, (Gross) Go devil or the totally ass kicking 75 H.p. F-head in an early Flattie.
@ 40-45 mph on the road. I bet you TJ is like a F ning rocket ship to the Jeeps they enjoyed for decades!

I have said it before, and I'm saying it again, I couldn't agree with you more @Chris in that the 4.0 sluggishness is accentuated once the mid-arm, outboard shocks go on. However, the best ability is reliability...I will take the reliability of the 4.0 all day long and enjoy it for how I enjoy my Jeep, I will take better lines and learn to be a better driver...as far as getting to the trails?

There is the tortoise and then there is the hare...I am resigned to being the tortoise...

I'm with you. Years ago I gave up caring about how fast I was able to go. Now, I just want to get there reliably. This is especially true off-road!

What's funny is I wheel with a group of V8s, granted older vehicles. They are constantly having issues. My little 4.0l quietly chugs along and gives me zero issues. The only negative thing I can say is I'm tired of opening the hood to let things cool off!

Just saw this and thought of you. Matt's recovery is swapping out the 4.0 in their XJ to the Golen Stroker. Spoiler - they haven't installed it yet so you'll need to stay tuned for a performance review.

I really would love to install the one I have. Unfortunately, both 4.0l engines I have run flawlessly. Plus, we all know the cascading effect. Then I'll have to rebuild the transmission, and, while it's out, I'd probably want to install a Rubicrawler. Having one in the LJ, the versatility of a 4 speed case, with the 241OR, is undeniable!

With the RubiCrawler, you get 4spds??
