Spare Tire Relocation Bracket?

So I have some bigger 33 inch wheels on my TJ which means I need to replace the stock spare wheel on the back. Problem is I'm pretty sure the new 33 inch wheel won't fit. I don't have the money right now to be installing a whole new carrier but I found this inexpensive bracket that allows you to mount bigger tires. Has anyone tried anything similar? How did it hold up? I am using BF Goodrich All Terrain T/As tires and here's the bracket I'm thinking about:

Chances are good that bracket will allow you enough space to mount the new 33" tire. I will caution you, however. The added weight hanging off your tailgate could result in damage to the hinges over time. This bracket would be a decent TEMPORARY solution until you can install a more robust tire carrier.

Not to threadjack but I have 33’s and my tailgate has a pretty good gap across the top, is there any solution other than a separate bumper mounted spare mount?

I've used something similar in the past and it work. Make sure you extend you snubbers so they make good contact with the back of the spare. If the spare is bouncing around it can warp the tailgate or hinges. If you keep it on there tight you won't have an issue. For reference the stock Rubicon tire and wheel weighed 75lbs.

I ordered another set and cut them so I could stack them.

My LJ has same tires, and someone previously spaced out the spare tire with hockey pucks to fit. It does work but the strain on the tailgate is too much, I’m currently looking at options for a tailgate reinforcement kit

Here’s what my tailgate looks like right now. Obviously something wrong although I don’t think it’s bent because the gap is the same all the way down. Is there a way to adjust the latch tighter?

Just loosen the striker and adjust it. It takes a T-50 torx.

Dude you need to be really watching what you’ve got going there....I would take the tire off and see if I can get it adjusted at the strike...The reason people run aftermarket carriers with big tires is because of stress on the tailgate and latch.

Yes I had a chance to look at it this evening, I did not realize the hole for the striker plate was oblong and there was room to move it. Adjusted it all the way up and forward and it is much better, but the tailgate is not what I would call flush with the tub.

Probably going to order this reinforcement kit, especially since I‘m eventually working towards being able to run 35s

You can't go wrong with the MORyde. You will have to re-adjust everything after the install anyway. Make sure you use some heat to soften the factory thread locker when breaking the tailgate hinge bolts.
