Apparently FB is suffering some massive outage right now

I've never heard of whatsapp. Unfortunate for those that have to rely on it.
My family and I started using whatsapp about 5 years ago. My daughter was in Singapore, and whatsapp allowed cheap phones calls without international charges. Recently, we use it as a group text and picture app. I get frequent pictures of my grandson.

Having whatsapp down for 6-8 hours didn't cause any problems. I'm sure there are other/better apps out there that do the same thing, but I haven't had the need to search for one.

I own a skirt about like that, and I've used scopes like that one.
Dude next time I’m on the space coast for work I wanna hang out. We’ll get some food & trash Facebook together.

I hate modern social media so, so much. I blame it for so many of the problems we currently have in our society.
The main reason I have FB is because it makes it very easy to communicate with my family over in Scotland.
I hate their censorship, Fact checker bullshit and jail.
Ive been put in jail and had my account suspended many...many times.
I also agree that social media platforms create prblems in our society. My sons friend committed suicide last year because she was being bullied on social media and in school.

I personally can't stand social media. And as far as I'm concerned, it should be shut down. It's legal spying....period.

I know that some of you will say it serves some kind of social need, but anything that tracks my activities, phone calls, web browsing, things I buy, people I talk to, places I go, is spying plain and simple.

If someone were to sneak around my house to spy on me, I'd probably shoot them. That pretty much tells you how I feel about Douche-book and Goggle and the like.

I don't know if that's really how it went down but I don't suppose it can be ruled out. I'm not in favor of her proposal that the issue be addressed through government regulation pushing additional censorship (and we know which direction that censorship will go). I just wish people would be more self-aware, see that they're being manipulated, and rise above it or bail.

I don't know how to buy and sell Jeep parts locally without facebook because craigslist has been overtaken by scammers around here. That's the only reason I'm on it at all. I'm building a presence over on MeWe in hopes that some likeminded folks will go but it hasn't gone well so far.

I don't see a single thing that "Social media" does for people that can't be replaced by email and/or discussion boards like this one. I never got involved with it in the first place - for this very reason in the beginning. Then I noted the faddishness of the whole thing, and the juvenile behavior which kept me away. It was only later that the rest of the crap about it came out, which was icing on the cake. People started using it for news - which has ZERO legitimacy as far as I'm concerned. Blah, blah...

Come to think of it, my ignoring "Social media" is pretty similar to my ignoring the smartphone. Neither solved a problem for me that couldn't be solved in other ways and/or cheaper, so neither was ever on my RADAR. Yet now, somehow, both are "expected".

the frustrating thing is that a social network doesn't HAVE to do ANY of that stuff. They just choose to, because it makes them lots of money.

As I alluded to in a previous post in this thread, Google and Facebook are pure, 100% advertising companies. People think Google provides software and Facebook is a social network, and that's absolutely not accurate. The software and search google provides to us are merely tools, a cost of business required for them to obtain the product they actually sell - OUR DATA! Same with facebook. It may have started as a social network, but once they created the "news feed" and allowed businesses into it, they become an advertising company, and again, their product is OUR DATA.

I'm really not trying to push anything, but MeWe at least claims to not do any of those things, and instead of making money on advertising, it simply charges for additional features, like a dark theme on it's app, or additional emoji's. Nothing I'm inclined to purchase, but hey, if someone else needs more emojis bad enough to pay for my use of the network, that's a heck of a lot better than the BS facebook does to me.

I've been on it a bit more in the last few days, joined a few Jeep and gun groups, followed a few interest pages, and have yet to see an ad or anything from any entity I didn't purposely engage with.
