What is it about the look of Metalcloak fenders that some do not like?

I never liked the look of the Metalcloak flares. They look gawdy to me. The only flare I prefer less than the MC are the Smitty. I don't recall any other flares that I specifically dislike other than those two.

I remember offending someone on the trail when I was talking about getting flares and she had the MC. Told me I should get them and apparently I wasn't focusing on hiding my dislike (made a face) and pissed her off.

That line has an interesting history.

CJ7s and YJs use to have vent windows and that line, where it becomes vertical and connects to the bottom edge of the door (just below the glass) was the place where the vent window frame would reside. TJs did away with vent windows, but they retained that line for continuity. It's a very nice nod to the past.

This makes me wonder if its possible to retrofit wing windows...

Not directly. Unless you want to retrofit doors as well .. and get into that rabbit hole.

I have wing windows in my 96 XJ. I wish I didn't. I like the idea of them, but they kinda suck when they don't seal well.

This is our own jscherb's take on flat fenders. I think these are the best variation of this look I've seen.

I noticed a comment in a recent very popular thread about a dislike of how MC fenders look, I believe I have seen this said before. Personally I don’t think they look bad at all. So if you do not like the look of MC fenders, can you share what it is? I guess, as compared to performance issues how something looks is an option, not an objective fact, but I am still interested.

To avoid a rerun of the other thread, I’m not asking about MC marketing or performance (things such as if the MC fenders allow more travel or not). My question is purely about aesthetics.

Early on in my Jeep experience I liked the Overlines. I never liked the Arched. Over time I don’t like them as much. I suppose they do have a small amount of function in some smaller builds, but the fact they don’t add any space to the back of the wheel well kills any functionality as you get bigger.

Jeff has a good eye. But there are other things (M38A1 style grille, inset headlights) going on here that help with the overall look. Would have been great to see these finished fully and installed on a vehicle.

Again, I don’t care one bit what anyone thinks. My point is I have been on the forums for years and years, mainly as a lurker/learner and occasional poster. Anyone that has done the same has saw a lot of people do a 180 about Metalcloak. People that thought they may be a cool new thing in the market. Expressing positivity then and since jumped on the ugly bandwagon…

If you wish to pile on, as you usually seem to do, then let’s talk about something else more interesting. Arguing about what each individual thinks of aesthetics is a complete waste of time as no two people have the same taste, usually…

Aesthetics is a personal opinio, I like them the when I first bought my Jeep but as I saw more jeeps with M/C fenders the newness faded and I don’t care much for that look. I do not care for how most of the aftermarket fenders look.

As did I, they have been serving me well.

Poison Spyder was actually top of my list until I learned they no longer sell aluminum ones 👎

Seems like all the options these days are a compromise somewhere. Everyone is going to have what they value more, whether it's aluminum, looks, clearance, ease of install, etc.

Just pick what works for you and stop worrying about what others think!

...

Poison Spyder is an interesting topic all by itself. First, TransAmerica bought PS a few years ago. Not long after, PS/TA stopped selling the aluminum highline fenders because they had a fairly common problem of cracking at the welds due to improper fabrication given the use of aluminum. As best as can be gathered, they chose to discontinue rather than reengineer the aluminum version of the fender.

I chose the MC arched fenders because it seemed like everywhere I looked, TJ's were running flat fenders. I simply wanted something different, yet good quality. I get lots of compliments and have had zero issues whatsoever. They work perfectly more my needs, but to each, his own.
