Installed Spare Tire Delete

So, I was looking at this cord in my jeep today and a light bulb went on (doesn't happen that much anymore, lol). I wonder if i can find this type wire to install where i now have the wire loom, so it extends and recoils?

I'll update after more research.

Good idea. I didn’t like the loom idea.

Are you guys still rambling about adding contacts and wires and whatnot? There’s no need! Ground to the tailgate and you can run two separate circuits into the tailgate through the original contacts. I’ve got brake lights, running lights, and a license plate light going to my Kentrol tailgate license plate holder (which is much better than the Hooke Road Amazon special or the “high-end” ones with their branding laser cut into the mount). Works flawlessly using the original contacts.

But are they constantly on (license light, etc.)? That's what I was wanting--only on when headlights are on. Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know?

Yes I have thought about doing this. I just didn't now how good the ground would be as my hinges were all corroded.

I'm working on this. The one time I needed a spare I couldn't use it because the rotor needed replacing and there were no studs to put lugnuts on. I got towed anyway.

Now my "spare" probably shouldn't be used. So I'm going to try it for a while without the spare. I at least need to find a new rim. And the tire will never be rotated in because the rim and tire would be different.

I made a bracket I need to grind some, clean up, and paint. It will have quick connects so it will be easily reversable and I can put the spare on if I plan an off road trip.

I may as well give it a try. Worst case, I put it back the way it was after buying a new rim amd maybe a new tire.

Between the 35 inch tire, rim, and bracket, I dropped around 100 lbs off the tailgate. Enough to raise the rear end around 1 inch.

I'd never go off roading without a spare.

I don’t carry a spare when in town as I have help a phone call away. I always carry a spare on the trail or when on a road trip, just in the tub. In my JL, I mount it vertical agains the roll cage and strap it the the floor and also the cage C pillar. In my LJ, I am planning to mount my 35” spare horizontal on the tub floor and I made a tie down loop that uses the center seat belt bolt hole for the back seat. Attached to that is a Yakima roof rack spare tie down that weights maybe 4-5 pounds and can be locked if desired. This will take up a lot of my available space but I like to COG of this set up and I believe I will be able to get all of my gear around/on top of is when the time comes. I am not sure this will work with a TJ without the tub stretch.

I cleaned up my tire and will leave it in for now, because I don't have the storage space for it. But I'll keep making the 3rd brake light out of curiosity
