Bigger oil filter

Do you remember oil changes on the TR6 with the reusable canister, totally impossible without covering everything in oil.

Yeah, I had to do the oil change while on a lift and bought a flexible oil funnel to channel the oil into a pan.

One of my cars had its oil filter located at the top of the engine, it was even sitting in a cup-shaped aluminum bowl that had a drain tube to let any spilled oil flow down into the pan. Its oil filter was easily changed and it created zero mess. It was pure genius, I wish I could remember which car that was.

I changed the oil in one of my wife’s friend Dodge truck. Not exactly the same, but if I remember correctly it had “cup” under it with a funnel to drain it. I thought that was a great idea, zero mess.

My TDI with the EA288 engine has the cartridge type oil filter hanging upside down in a very tight spot. I have a tool that you put over the bottom and turn it, it opens the oil filter drain plug and drains into the tool with plastic tubing to your container, then when drained you screw the drain plug back in and remove the now empty housing. It's about the only way you can remove the filter without a major mess.

I have one of the form-a-funnels that @cliffish posted, waiting for my next oil change to see how it works.

Why do so many Ferrari's have two oil filters?

High RPM engines? Because they probably run race oil like the 0w10 or whatever.

I can't afford to window shop for one so I really can't answer the question either :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

My 1993 VW VR6, 2013 WRX were like this, and also my 2017 VW golf R is like this

The VWs with the 2.0 turbo have the cartridge right on top.

Changed my oil today using the flexible funnel shown in post #21 and it's the first time I've ever been able to do it without slopping oil all over the starter and block. I had my doubts at first but it really works. I fixed it under the filter pointed over the control arm bushing and sloping down just past the exhaust. First I poked a hole in the filter and let most of the oil out, put a screw in the hole and unthreaded the filter some more and let it drain the rest then removed it. I am using the large Motorcraft FL-1A which is tricky to maneuver around in there but didn't spill a drop.
