I grabbed the Tuffy glovebox on sale on Amazon, 170 down from the usual 200. Just finished installing.

It went mostly smoothly, but I did run into some trouble once I got to the step that requires you to drill a second set of holes in the steel glovebox frame behind the lock catch.

The instructions have you 1. remove all the old screws, then 2. put them all back with the Tuffy unit in place, 3. Then drill the extra two holes. But with the box in place and swung down, it's nearly impossible to get a drill in there. And doing so at the awkward angle with a power drill while trying to keep it perfectly centered up down and left right through the holes in the unit would've been impossible. So I had to go completely in reverse, then drill the holes.

Ended up having to do the install basically twice. For anyone considering getting one, I highly recommend lining up the holes to mark and start them, but drilling before installing the new unit. Would've taken me half the time had I done that.

But otherwise, I couldn't be happier with it now that it's in. I have a lot of shit to store in the jeep, and between Tuffy's trunk enclosure, driver's seat drawer (both of which I've had for years), and this thing, I feel 110% confident that it's all safe, and am looking forward to getting the center console soon. I also have the over the wheel well boxes to install once I get the soft top on for the season.

Figured I'd drop this here in case it can be helpful to someone.

My 97 had a Tuffy glove box. PO installed it.

It rattled all the time. I spent hours adjusting tabs, lock catch, adding weatherstripping. The only way to get it to not rattle was stuff a rag in-between the box and flange and slam the glove box shut. That then had the reverse effect of putting so much pressure on the lock that it wouldn't unlock.

I removed the glove box and my security drawer...or rather didn't reinstall them when I did my tub and frame swap.

Hopefully a properly installed unit will be trouble free.

I have the Tuffy under hood lock, Center console insert, Under drivers lock box, and the rear instant Trunk. I love them all. Especially the Under seat lock box. I have everything keyed the same but, I put the combination lock on the Under seat lock box. It's great for going canoeing and i can lock up my keys etc.

I haven't done the glove box. Let us know how you like it after you use if for a while.

I have a brand new glove box I never installed. I dug it out a few weeks ago to finally put it in but decided to hold off for now. I have the center console insert, which I think is great, once I put my console back in. I am just not sure I need both. But if I do decide to put it in I greatly appreciate the advice.

I have the glovebox and under DS seat drawer (keyed alike). Absolutely love them both. Don’t recall glovebox having any issues when installing 🤷🏼‍♂️

@macleanflood No rattles from glove box in 10+ years; even after swapping it from my 97 to the “new to me” 98. I suspect the PO tweaked something during install.

I was definitely prepared for the worst, as I've heard a number of comments/reviews like this. Agree with the comment above that your PO may have botched the install. All I had to do was bend the catch a little to make the right side of the door seat to the frame a little better.

I hadn't thought of that. You just convinced me to finally install the combo lock i have sitting around
Same here, I love it. Too bad I just ordered a new lock to key the glove box alike to my other stuff. Could've thrown that on the order.

I also have a different key for the gas cap, one for the hood lock, one for the disklok on the steering wheel, and one for the clutch shackle (the thing is like fort knox), and having an extra of all of them stowed in another lockable compartment would be excellent. Cause I'm always ever so slightly paranoid I'll lose one and get stranded with my steering wheel lock on.

Can confirm a J-frame fits beautifully

I like that but after having had my earlier TJ stolen I've always been wary of leaving it inside, I carry mine 99.9% of the time. I think I should reconsider something like that, there are times I need to go into a building like my VA clinic where I can't carry. I have to lock it up in my Tuffy center console which means I have to mostly empty it to make enough room for it. Yours looks perfect for my Glock 43X.

I had the underseat compartment, it was used to hold insurance/wallet/keys. Any gun bounces around in there. I got rid of mine several years ago.

I wouldn't recommend leaving a gun to ride in there for any reason. Besides that, what good is carrying a gun locked away? But when you have to leave one in a parked Jeep, it's great for that.

Who said mine is always locked

I liked my Shield very much ... But I like the Shield Plus so much better. I have a Tuffy rear drawer that I can use for temp storage if I need to but I'm with Jerry on this one, unless I have to go in somewhere it is actually illegal to do so, like the Post Office or a Federal building, it is on my person. Here in ID, posting "no guns" anywhere else is only a preference. If they see it, they can ask you to leave, but they have to find it first.

My initial thought after installing a Tuffy glove box years ago was how easy it would be to pry it open. Immediately after that, my second thought was how little room there is inside compared to the factory one I just took out. But I lived with it for many years after. Passengers often complained about the steel hook handle poking their knee.

Then a few months ago, I found my original factory glove box again and immediately put it back where it belongs. The Tuffy went into the trash recently.

I did the same for similar reason.

A Ruger LC9 with extended mag will fit, and I believe a Glock 19X will fit when the mag is removed.

I can confirm a 19X fits nicely.

I use gun magnet adhered to side of the box. It allows pistol to rest on the felt in bottom of drawer but keeps it from bouncing around.

Man I really miss my previous TJ's Tuffy glove box after getting into this thread. It really makes me want to install another.
