Mickey Thompson Tire Comparison

I have 35x12.5x17 MT BB MTs on my JT, and they have been great, other than the noise. 5 tire rotation, and I am at about 45k miles on the set, and will need to replace before my trip out west this summer. The BBs did not do too very well on the snow/ice we had for the week here...

Than said, I will be putting 35x11.5x17 Falken Wildpeak AT4s on instead, as I do not go offroad enough to justify the MT's again (and the AT4s are a load C in that size). I put 33x12.5x15 Falken Wildpeak AT3s (load C) on the TJ, and have been very impressed with their performance. Better on snow/ice than the BBs, 50k warranty, and extremely quiet as compared to both the BBs on the JT, and the BFG ATs (31x10.5x15 All Terrains previously on the TJ)

I've run M/T for years - still have the Baja ATZs on - wish the hell they still made them. Great tread wear.

Newer version comparison is the Baja Legend EXP.

Discount tire can get me five Boss tires from the east coast, but warned me that they've been discontinued by MT. WTF is that all about? I didn't expect that since the Boss is supposed to be a newer offering.
If that's true, that was a short lived tire run. I liked my Dick Cepek extreme country tires that got discontinued also, I think. I bought them with a $200 instant rebate and on sale.

I just got a set of MTZ Legend’s. Only a few weeks old so not much to say. I’d seen them on one if @Irun rigs and was impressed. They’re also made in the USA, which was attractive to me. The 35’s only weighed 65.4lb. Very good for a 35. Load D.

Those are the upgraded MTZ P3, aren't they?

I read last night that the DC tire turned into the MTZ when MT acquired the company. I’ve also read that the Legend MTZ is an upgraded P3 MTZ.

Goodyear owns the whole thing now. Cooper owned MT and DC. Goodyear bought out Cooper and all sub brands in June 2021. High odds GY will screw it up.

Yea Cooper acquired Mickey Thompson and Dick Cepek around 2003, and then GY acquired Cooper around 2021.

I have the Baja Boss AT's on my 2000 in a 33x12.50x17. They do great daily driving, in rain, snow, and off-roading. Granted, I've not done much off-road with them on the TJ, but I have seen them do great things on rocky trails. I've got about 7k miles on them and they still look new. They've had 1x 5 tire rotations so far.

My brother had a set on a Gladiator he lifted that had 40k miles on the tires when he traded it in. They still looked almost new.

Hopefully Goodyear doesn't junk up MT. I dispise Goodyear tires.

My wheels are 3.75” BS. I have one washer on the steering stops. It still brushes the SL when articulating and turning off-road.

P.s. You probably know, but if not, MT has a $100 rebate on 4 tires right now. The Legends are included. I think the rebate offer extends through end of April. I purchased through Simple Tire and picked them up at Fed Ex a few days later. Best deal I could find.

I haven’t driven too much but I’m happy with the 35x17 MTZ Legends so far on the road. They ride nicer than my load-C 35x15 STT Pros (both at 25 psi).

I can’t tell a difference between my last Load C’s and these Load D’s in same size and psi. Good tire so far, but a long way to go till I know much more.

Coming from 15s to these 17s…I noticed the tires felt less harsh. I’ll know soon enough on how they do handle offroad conditions.

I’ve learned from others that comfort can vary between same diameter/model tires, and load rating doesn’t determine comfort, so I shouldn’t be surprised by the results.

I noticed that I didn’t bounce as much yet they road a littler less harsh…coming from 15s to these 17s. I’ll know soon enough on how they do handle offroad conditions.

I went from 15’s to 17’s too. I should have mentioned that difference. So far these have been really fun when airing down to 6-7psi with the beadlocks.

I googled low rolling resistance mud tire and found those for my tj. They were a good mix between a mud and all terrain

Looks awesome man I love the wheels with the red.

I didn't go below 10-12 psi on the 10" wide wheel because I didn't want to lose too much height or a bead in the rocks.

I'll likely play with things between 6-8 psi and see if I have any clearance issues. It's possible that the tire will sit a little higher than my previous setup since it won't wrap around a wider wheel.

Previously, I'd throw off my wheel balance by spinning the low-psi tires on the wheels while crawling in the rocks. Hopefully, that won't happen with the BLs clamping down the outside bead.

FWIW, I liked the look of the wider setup more because it looks right to my eye to offset the lift height, but I've already noticed that this setup has much better road manners so I have no regrets.

I got the wheels from a guy who had TR make them with 3.75" of bs, so we'll see how well things clear the SL. I would have chosen 3.5" over the 4" option because I didn't know 3.75" was available, by request, until very recently. I hope that 3.75" works well for clearing the SL without having too much scrub radius.

They will probably still rub but as long as it’s not breaking shit it’s alright.

I like the MTZ look more than the Boss, but was going to get the Boss because of the positive reviews.

Big Brand Tire told me today that they couldn't get me the Boss tire. Discount tire can get me five Boss tires from the east coast, but warned me that they've been discontinued by MT. WTF is that all about? I didn't expect that since the Boss is supposed to be a newer offering.

I'm leaning towards the MTZ since they look similar to my STT Pros that I like. The STT Pros are on backorder for Discount tire until May.

Discontinued?wth?
