CB radio locations

CB in the dash, GMRS and Ham on the overhead Arizona Rocky Road bar.

I don’t use CB, GMRS is all we use out here… in the TJ I just use a UV-5R as radio. I just use a bracket mounted to instrument bezel. I have a 12 battery adaptor, and a handheld mic/speaker for it.

I mounted mine in my console and then ran a remote plug in for the mic cable to the dash as well as hooked up an external speaker. It stays hidden most of the time when not in use but is functional when needed.

I mounted my gmrs on a Az Rocky Road bar above the mirror. I did this because I have hearing difficulties and added an external speaker. Mines 50watts so I wired directly to the battery. On the plus side it’s easy for the front and rear passengers to access it. The con is the mic cord hangs down in your view. I have a retractable lanyard for the mike. When not in use I tuck the cord above the bar.

I removed the passenger airbag . We use magnets for mic holders . The hole around the Ham/GMRS is a little big because it was for an older radio before upgrading to the smaller dual band unit . The Wilson Sleek phone cradles are now obsolete , so I found the Phone Buddies to hold on to our phones for us . The antennas that were attached to the Wilson Sleeks now attach to a Cradle Point modem/router for onboard WiFi .

So I’ve installed the unit and ran cables and all. My receiving and transmitting audio sounds very distorted. I got the 24” magnetic antenna Amazon recommended, which I’m assuming isn’t good enough? I know fuck all about radio signals.

Check your SWR

Get a good one, a cheap ass meter is just that: cheap.

One one these will work just fine. However, before you buy an SWR meter, be sure that the magnetic antenna you purchased can be tuned. Most can by removing and trimming the whip.

My GMRS (mxt275) is mounted to the side wall up under the left side of the dash and the cat 6 extension cable is on the right front side of the center console.

Wana see this. I have been wanting to upgrade my 15 year old FRS radios and every time I start looking at GRMS the sheer number of recommendations and possibilities is just overwhelming. Been looking at the overhead bar and it is stupid simple to make one, so might go that direction.

I put my CB under my passenger seat after raising the seat a half inch or so. The location is perfect. I haven’t used it once since I put it there. Lol
