Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

For those who might have noticed I'd put the temperature sensor bung on the passenger side instead of the drivers side. On the 46RE pan the sensor wires were really close to the driveshaft. So my thinking was that I would put it on the passenger side and if needed I'll wrap the wires in heat shielding if the exhaust is close.

Pan is just back on with 4 bolts until the filters arrive. But one more task completed.

I'm not getting pissy about it just pointing out that I've been running them and only due to my fault was the only time I've had a failure.
You do realize most semis have air bag suspension on them? That's what the air springs on mine are.

My point about the V-8 was that Jeep could have done one in the YJ/TJ/JK with no issues.
CJ's used to be offered with a V-8.
I'm sure the reason they didn't was either bean counters or EPA reasons?

Insurance and warranty issues also too. There would have been a lot of broken and wrecked little wranglers if chrysler had turned the general public loose with v8s in the smaller short wheelbase jeeps.the 305 in cjs was what, 120hp?

My understanding was that in the smaller YJ and TJ platforms could not support the proper crumple zones around the larger engine. Not sure about the JK. No first hand info, however.

I'm not sure what the HP rating was at the time but like you said it wasn't much.
I'm sure we could ponder and speculate for weeks about the why's and never come to a consensus. There's always going to be things the manufacture doesn't offer but that we'd all like to see.

Getting to see some of the vehicles offered in other countries always makes you ask why we're not offered them. I got to see a few when I was in Germany.

With the new tilt steering column I can now see the dash without the steering wheel cutting off the top of the dash. But with the quick disconnect hub it puts the steering wheel too close to me even with the seat all the way back. Did some looking around and found out NRG sold a short hub. The hub I have is 2.5" deep.

Got the short hub in yesterday so I decided I'd install it now.

With the tilt column all the way up I have dash again.

I'd already given my son the PRP steering wheel that I wasn't using. But because it is a flat wheel he was hitting the levers on the street column. So I'll be sending him the quick disconnect hub for his Sidekick.

The TJ platform had to be replaced because of the new federal safety standards in 2007 which included crumple zone, air bag and a slew of other nanny state crap. There were some emission stuff that also contributed to killing the 4.0 and Chrysler had no interest in pursuing a new inline 6 at the time. Ironic that nearly 20 years later they are brining inline sixes back.

All that nanny/safety BULLSHIT sure has screwed us over in the past 30 years...

I'm just glad we all still have these rigs to work on and we can do pretty much anything we want. I can't imagine trying to work on some of the newer rigs.

Found out my heads might not ship until next week. Ryan is on vacation & the heads are at the machine shop so getting them might be an issue until he's back home.

I can still get my Jeep stripped down and getting things ready for the Hemi. I can use the short block for mocking up the motor mounts.
I've found the fuel pedal bracket so that is taken care of. So right now it looks like things are coming together.

I feel in agreement with you on a lot of these, but I will try to play devil’s advocate here. My understanding might be flawed so feel free to correct.

It’s not “supposed”, it is a GREAT offroad vehicle. The most capable one available in the US.

More like $100k, not that that’s any less crazy.

And yet people are buying them. I would bet these 392s will hold their value very well long term.

What year/models have you driven? My mom’s stock ‘24 4XE Sahara drives AMAZING, better than some German sedans I’ve driven.

I am skeptical on the importance of factory installed high-end shocks on all JLs, for the same reasons we don’t see factory oneton axles. But that’s a topic for another discussion.

IMO, an airbag-only suspension doesn’t belong on an offroad vehicle. But for street only use, I don’t see why not. I know Jeep had a concept JL with airbags a year ago, not sure if that has moved forward at all.

On the Hemi, I think government regulations must be a part of Jeep not bringing it out earlier.

Had the Bronco not come out, we might’ve never seen a V8 Wrangler.

I wish they did this too, like how Ford does it with the Bronco. You can add the Sasquatch package to a lower trim, and that gets you lockers, gears, lift, beadlocks and more.

They did just add a rear locker to the Willys model? So at least they’re heading in the right direction somewhat.

Where did you get that? Yes sales have slowed, but Jeep was Stellantis’s most succesful brand up until very recently.

Again, regulations.

Crash safety regulations make it impossible to sell a TJ-like vehicle in today’s day and age.

Also, emissions standards. Bigger vehicle means less stringent emissions rules to follow.

Are we talking offroad performance? If so, a JL would absolutely destroy a TJ offroad for a variety of reasons, size notwithstanding.

I have only driven TJ’s and JKU’s. I have not driven a 2024.

The TJ/LJ is the best off-road platform ever produced. It got worse after that. Everyone knows this. Jeep even added a 2WD option back in the 2007-2011 years. They did dumb things like 4-doors (not a Jeep, sorry), added TPMS (WTH?), kept the stupid Mercedes 6-speed NSG-370, and didn’t add a V-8 till Ford decided Jeep was so stupid that they could steal a lot of the market. Ford literally listened to Jeep consumers more than Chrysler/Fiat/Stellantis Group.

Why didn’t they put a V-8 in the TJ? No idea really. They had them in some CJ’s. I can’t see how it could have anything to do with the EPA since they were putting V-8’s in other vehicles. Sure would have been nice since it would allow for seamless, well thought out setups.

I say that because Jeep prices are rising and quality is declining. People are starting to notice. This is true for all American built vehicles though.

Bigger vehicles to ‘get around’ EPA rules is a better way to state it IMHO. Lawyer-ease.

What I meant about the body on frame comment was that if you are going to produce a vehicle that is made to go off-road (which obviously they are), then why the nanny tech BS like TPMS? GTFO

I didn’t mean that they should add air suspensions, but some bad ass shit that someone comes up with would be nice. Something LIKE they did with the Cherokee. Something fitting. Instead they were thinking about other things I guess.

As far as the EPA and all that nanny state BS, it makes no sense. I was a biologist and a member of an anti-global warming group of scientists (anthropogenic global warming) organization from 2000-2005. There’s nothing being accomplished with these standards. It’s no different than the radar detector movement. The EPA moves one way, the Automotive Engineers move another. Kinda like dodge ball. In the meanwhile there is the PEOPLE. WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT US? Nobody. It’s all about control.

It was a 304ci in the CJs and they were rated @ 125hp until 1980, in '80 and '81 smog crap choked them down to just over 100hp.

As has been said a couple different times, the why could be a combination of many things... Frame modifications on a platform they knew was on it's way out, EPA regulations, NHTSA?, cost...??? Pick your poison. One of the first vehicles I ver drove was a CJ5 with a 304. I drove the hell out of that CJ too. I couldn't begin to say how many miles I ut on the old man's Jeep, (mainly because I disconnected the spedo caple from the spedometer so dad wouldn't know how much I was driving it).

Sure it sounded good but I would be willing to bet a stock TJ 4.0 would get up and walk away from that 304 CJ every day of the week.

It begins.... I've got a LOT of stuff to remove for this swap.

And then I thought I'd found the gas pedal bracket. But then the guy is trying to sell me a different gas pedal because he says mine is the wrong one. This has been going on for over 3 hours.... FUCK...

Well the GOOD NEWS for today is that I have a gas pedal bracket coming. The guy who said he had one and then after I'd paid him he wanted more money for shipping and then tried to tell me I had the wrong gas pedal.
I have a pedal with part #53034003AB TeraFlex suggested you us a #52109683AB which was from a 2005 GC or a #530324AB which was from a Dodge Ram. The pedal I have is also from a Dodge Ram but from 2007-2008. So I'll reach out to Todd at JeepSpeed & Chris at Hotwire and see if this is a issue.

But I got an email from Todd @ JeepSpeed and he's sending me a gas pedal bracket with my other parts. So I'm happy.

When I get back from my doctors appointment tomorrow I will work on the Jeep some more. Need to drain the transmission and remove the STaK's t-case. Which is going to just be loads of FUN getting the shifter cables disconnected. Once I've got the t-case and the transmission removed I'll remove the wiring harness. Then I've got to drop my fuel tank and get the fuel pump modified to work with tank. And the list goes on.

Put I do want to get the engine & transmission & t-case mocked up so I can see what I'm going to have to do to make the Hemi work in my TJ.

I have a friend with a 79 cj5, 304/3speed. He thought he'd be cute when i put the stroker in my jeep and try to race me. I beat him at half throttle. All it does well is drink fuel

I could pull the front tires off the ground in the CJ5 I learned to drive in... Stock 304 in it..

This is partly why doing a 360 or 401 swap was so popular back then. And of course doing a SBC swap was the rule of thumb.

Had some buddies with built 401's in a CJ7 and those things could scream.

I had a 66 rambler classic 660 i wanted to put a 401 in back in highschool. But I'm still alive so it's probably a good thing i didn't.
