Dana 30 HP and Dana 44 ARB locker install and re-gear

Doesn't the one video show a Dana 44 on a JK. I thought the JK housing was larger than a TJ/LJ Dana 44 ... or is the air line routing and fitting placement the same?

FFS watch the video. It's a standard TJ 44. And watch the ads. Subscribe and watch all the other ads too

You forgot to tell us to put on a playlist when you go to work in the morning and leave it playing all day for the cats/dogs/housecleaners you're affording with all your YT money.

Here is my first patern for the rear Dana 44 LJ axle:

I think my pinion depth is too much. If it is too deep how much shim should I remove?

Take out 5 thou and post another pic. May need to make one more adjustment after that.

I removed 0.005" from the pinion depth and adjusted the backlash to 0.005":

I will not be able to make any small increment changes until additional shims get here on Friday.

Edit: The pinion shim stack is .064"

Your coast side looks slightly shallow but the drive side looks pretty close. You may want to experiment some with the shims to get it perfect.

Be sure to write this combination down so you can come back to it if necessary. Since it's a lie pinion rear axle, you'll want to favor the drive side if you can't get both patterns to agree.

I increased the pinion shim stack from 0.064" to .066". The backlash is now 0.0095"

Here is the pattern for the Dana 44:

You can see the other caps (X) also. Really faint. I would swap them to match the factory marks.

I can see that in the photo now that you have mentioned it. The gears are OEM so my guess is that somone was in there to fix the clutch pack on the Track Loc. I have swapped the caps per your recommendation. Thanks for having a keen eye.

Well, I like your pattern in post #74 (66 thou) better than 67 thou. At least we know👍.

Go with 66 thou, get backlash in spec,, 16-20 thou pinion preload and run it.

Here is what I have with the 0.067" pinion preload shim stack ... and 0.009" backlash:

The revolution gear spec is 0.006" to 0.010". Am I ok to run 0.009"? I am kind of stuck. I need to run the OEM master shim on the ring gear side so I can notch it for air tube clearance. I am only using the OEM and ARB master shims (on the ring gear side) and the thinest shim I have is 0.004. 0.004" would likely put be near or below 0.006" backlash. Should I run a backlash of 0.009" or should I try to close it up?
