Ready Player One was enjoyable to me. Along with The Martian, The Hobbit, Fahrenheit 451, The Silo series (Wool, Shift, Dust).

I have read and enjoyed The Martian and The Hobbit. Fahrenheit 451 was another book that we were required to read in High School (and one that I actually read) but I forgot about until now so I think I will read it! Thanks! I will look into The Silo series.

Any recommendations on my next read? I was thinking about shifting from classic novels to science fiction and starting the Enders Game series.

I don't spend much time reading books anymore. But when I worked in the frack, I had lots of spare time. I enjoyed the Divergent book series. Read each book in one sitting. The movies are decent too, but i preferred the book for the added details.

Not the same genre, but if you enjoy realistic apocalyptic type stuff, I absolutely love the One Second After book series by William Forstchen. It's about an EMP striking the US and how everything plays out after.

Cool. Like it? Now you have to read the book to understand everything that was happenning.

I am happy I watched it, but It was a "cute" movie. Tonya said she didn't really want to watch a "space" movie but she liked it.
I am sure the book is much better.

If you're talking 80s scifi you definitely gotta read the nueromancer

My son actually just handed this to me and told me I should read it.

Quick update after my mt bike accident. I am still in neck brace for another few weeks, but I am definitely feeling much better. All the bruising on my arm, side, and leg has gone. My rib pain is still there but subsided. Still struggling with sleeping on the recliner but sleeping better than I was. I will hopefully be out of the neck brace on Sept 11 and then mostly due to the atrophy of my neck muscles will have to start physical therapy. I told my wife that I was going to celebrate getting out of the neck brace by taking the Jeep to Hawk Pride and the look she gave me may have taken me closer to death then the accident. She is going on a cruise with her sister and sister in law the first week of October so that may be the weekend I go to Hawk Pride 🤣.

During my time of not being able to do anything I decided to actually read the books that I was supposed to read in High School. I have read; To Kill a Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath, and Lord of Flies (actually read the books and not just the cliff notes that the hometown video rental store sold when I was a teenager). I have reread 1984 (probably the third time I have read it) and The Stranger in the Boat (which is a good short read that I have read multiple times over the years). Any recommendations on my next read? I was thinking about shifting from classic novels to science fiction and starting the Enders Game series.

Enders game is good but Enders shadow is better. ;) and of course Lord of the Rings if you have not already read it. Project Hail Mary is also very good. For sci fi I would recommend: the Man who fell to earth and imperial earth. Both very good!

Vic, If you’ve got time and you haven’t read any of them, I recommend starting on the Patrick O’Brien Aubrey/Maturin novels.

They are historical fiction set in the age of sail and follow a British Naval officer (Aubrey) and a physician serving as ship’s surgeon (Maturin) during the Napoleonic wars.

Its not fast reading. The writing is very detailed and pretty dense. Much like Tolkien, if you take the time, you can really picture the scene and feel the emotion. The books are reasonably historically accurate in the larger sense and extremely accurate in the details of daily life and occasionally fighting in His Majesty’s Ships of the era.

If you try one, start with the first: “Master and Commander”. There was a movie of that name that borrowed from 2 or 3 of the books but it was a poor screen adaptation, in my opinion.

Steven King's dark tower series. Starts with the gunslinger (kind of a prequel). Takes a bit to get into it (I had to start gunslinger a couple times), but once you're in, you're IN. The movie was NOTHING like the book...which is pretty typical of Steven King novels.

Glad to hear you're healing up Vic. I haven't been on my bike much (at all) for the last couple years...no real reason other than time and laziness, but I do understand the thrill of the flow and feeling the rhythm and rhyme. A bad crash is always kinda in the back of my head (left overs from a header into a tree hard enough to split a helmet, probably). Thankfully, that was only a minor concussion in my early 20's. Now, near 50, I'm just slow, LOL. I'll turn it up for a bit, but then always think about it afterward...."Man, that was dumb!" I feel like I'm always telling myself, "Slow down, be in control." The skills are still there, but they are rusty and I'm just not able to move like I could. I'm getting to a point where I think its time to sell my "good" bikes and just get one for cruising around campgrounds and the occasional easy trail.

Update after my accident.
My neck xrays came back good last friday and I was cleared to take off the Neck Brace and start Physical Therapy. I can turn my neck to left and right and nod it up and down pretty much through full range of motion, but I can't lean my neck in neither direction very much. I think normal is 45 deg or more and I am maybe at half that.

I went out and fired up my F150 which had a slow crank but fired after sitting for 2 months, my van had a slow crank and fired after sitting for 3 months, the Jeep battery was dead dead after sitting for 2 months. I don't know if I left something on (can't find it if I did) or if I have a parasitic draw. The battery was so dead that it didn't want to take a charge, I was able to jump it off using a jump box (which surprised me) and I left the jeep run for sometime and all seems to be good, the alternator seemed to charge the battery. I put a 2A charger on when I put it back in the garage and will see what happens after a few days.

I've got a small drain on my Jeep too. I'm hoping once I fix the dual battery system that this might fix it....

Man, it's good you're recovering so well.
I would be reluctant to do anything too hard Jeep wise. It is a lot of work for your neck being off road.

Enjoy the reading time. I'll add The Blade Itself by Joe Ambercrombie. It's the start of a series. Fantasy, dark but clever.

Hey Victor,

I’ve been mostly away from the forum and just saw this and went back and read your story.

Blessings and prayers for a full recovery. That must have been a gnarly fall. The trip sounded epic. Sorry it ended this way but glad you are making good progress. Prayerfully you’ll be back in the bike in no time.
