California Mendocino NF 2/5–2/7 Camping and Wheeling Trip

Just for info Jim, if you take them down French Ridge you might want to take a chain saw. I've been down French Ridge twice in the last two months. There is an area that is thick with a lot of smaller burnt pine trees that are hanging over the road and keep falling in the road. I had to cut trees out both times, once with the SxS and once with the TJ. And with all this wind we are having, guaranteed to be more trees down in the burnt areas.
Thanks for the fyi LR. I'll bring my small saw just in case.

Looking to explore the southern edge of MNF in Jims backyard.

If you just want to meet up 2/6 to wheel that’s okay as well. No obligations to camp

Itinerary:
2/5: Get to MNF probably after dark and find a spot to dispersed camp
2/6: Meet up with Jim and others to wheel (I have a Garmin Inreach I can send my GPS coords), find a nice campsite to chill/have dinners/beers
2/7: A little more exploring, maybe hiking, before heading home.

I have camping gear people could borrow if they wanted to camp.
My buddy has a zr2 gas 2020 on 33s and is dying to go. I’m sure he’ll be talking zr2 stuff with you. Keep in touch. So how many people on the list now ?

I’ll work on a more finalized list closer too, weather may be a huge factor as we’re due for a week and a half of rain which might make it too muddy or snowy to really try. We’ll see.

We got hit pretty good down to 1500 feet. Mountains surrounding the lake are white. Unless we get another cold front between now and the 6th, this will mostly melt. @tomtaylz I have the repeater frequencies and tones for the Hunter repeater in MNF, and the one on Konocti. I'll PM you those if this run comes to fruition.

You’re not on Ham yet right? Cause if we wanted to get real fancy I could put in APRS and it’d be pretty easy to find me.

No, not yet. Just GMRS licensed at this juncture. I just installed my GMRS radio and 6db antenna in the jeep yesterday, so I'm still getting used to it. I was able to hit the Cobb Mt. tower and talk to someone. That's about a 30 mile range hit. Konocti's tower is supposed to have good coverage, so we shall see. Do you think you can dumb yourself down to us lowly GMRS'ers? Lol!

Hahah APRS you can use to basically send your location, so then other people using APRS can see you on a map on a connected device like a tablet. Great way to meet up with people when there’s no coverage.

see aprs.fi for examples. It’s the same technology indy has sent texts from the rubicon too

Pretty much melted from 3000 feet and lower. We'll see what this week gives us. Sounds like mostly rain. @Gone-N-Done-It might give us a report from his exploits today from the north end.

Sounds like we’re on. I spent the weekend camping central coast so no need to pack.

Please respond if you’re camping or just wheeling Saturday. I might leave work early friday and try to get there earlier to scout out and find a good camp spot.

I will camp the whole weekend :) i get off work at 2 so I could be loaded and ready to go before 3

Yep, looks like the weather forecast will be in your favor. Mid 60's and nice. There will still be small smitterings of snow above 5000 feet, but should mostly be clear. We can always hit Snow Mt. if you guys want to play in the snow. @tomtaylz, I'll PM you the frequencies to Konocti tower and Hunter tower. I have a bit of an issue with Konocti tower because it used split tones, but I can work thru it on monitor mode.

I was almost knee deep where on the FH7 where it goes from asphalt to dirt which is around 4000ft. even after going over the mound they were nice enough to leave in the way I made it about 10ft so some melt would be good. If I were to guess there will still be plenty the higher you go though it may be icy or have a crust on top From the trips I have made this year if we can get to 5-6K feet it seems the snow has been sticking pretty well. (not a weatherman)
