What did you do to your TJ today?

Finally finished wiring up new HVAC switches and cleaning out the melted mess. While doing that, I realized the awful smell coming from the vents wasn’t something in the heater plenum, but was the blower/vent mode switch burning and melting. Which would explain why $60 of Lysol, vent cleaner, bleach, and hvac refresher did nothing to remedy the smell...
 
Custom mount? Do have any photos. Was thinking ABS tray for compressor but something in air box area for winch pack and compressor might be good idea.
PO welded it in. Just a square tube with a plate on top. It’s attached to the back side of the shock tower. It had a ARB double on it but I’m going with a single.

Im trying to replace my one piece '99 console:

(Note the front square hole that houses the airbag switch.)

With a later model 2 piece. With subwoofer. With the front coin tray with what appears like the same size square hole:

Trying to figure out if that coin tray hole will fit the airbag switch. Otherwise im just going to keep the airbag switch wired and try to tuck it under the front of the console or up under the dash.

Either way. The consoles are a quagmire to understand. I wish someone that knew did a pic heavy how to on exchanging them.

Also what is everyone using for frame rail undercoating ???
2 falls ago I used an air needle scaler, wire brush wheel, scraper and whatever else it took to clean off as much rust as I could from my frame and other parts. I worked from the doors-back and last spring I finished everything forward of that and then used POR15. First I degreased everything and used their metal prep and followed with 2 coats of the POR15. Still looks good! 2 Michigan winters for the back half of the Jeep and I am very happy with it. The hard part is done which was cleaning it up as best as possible, now just give it look over and touch up any areas that might flake off but it’s a great product!

Did you use anything to just get the dirt off? I dont have much rust being in socal. But i do have that decades of baked on dirt. Having a hard time getting it off. Tried different cleaners and the car wash. Also cant imagine doing this without a lift. Have even considered taking it someplace to just strip the dirt off. Professional power washing? Idk.

Re-wired part of the DC feed to the GMRS and Ham radios. When I installed the Ham radio, and relocated the GMRS, I simply extended the existing wiring that was already in place for the 5 watt GMRS. Not surprisingly, the local voltage at the 25w Ham radio would drop to about 11.7 v (engine off) when the mike was keyed.

I knew better, I knew better when I did it - and I did it anyway...

So now the old 18 gauge (!!) portion of the wiring has been replaced with 14...

looks good, I wanna do my frame its starting to show a little age paint starting to fade and wanna revamp it, did you just brush that stuff on ?

I didn’t have that problem but I would think the rust would be tougher to tackle so maybe just try a needle scaler like I used and maybe a scraper or putty knife?? Interesting though, I wouldn’t think dried, caked on dirt would be such a pain to clean off. I just jacked the Jeep up as high as my jack would go with an additional 2x8 for a little more height and crawled under and got to work on it.
If I would have thought about it before I was a complete mess, I would have used a disposable painters suit. Put it on and just power wash the hell out of it!
 
It’s because of horror stories like this that I think a new bumper with a tire carrier is the way to go! I’ve been struggling trying to decide which way to go. I just ordered new wheels and tires yesterday and I’m going with Pro Comp 7069 and 32” Falken Wildpeaks and I think I want to try and put the spare on the stock mount but I’m afraid it’ll be too heavy. I did the math and altogether it’ll be 75lbs. So now I’m looking at bumpers with tire carriers and not wanting to spend another $450-600! It’s a daily driver and never or rarely off-road, although metro Detroit roads are like a war zone!

I know people run 33’s and larger on their stock carrier but what do y’all think? Is that too heavy or no?
Well, don’t let my story defer you cause I probably could have prevented this if I was more patient and maybe put penetrating oil on ahead of time or something. I always find a way to make easy things complicated. But either way seems alright to me, I went with the morryde because I found a good deal on it. I had considered going with a dirtworx rear bumper with tire carrier as well.

vacuumed then portable spot cleaner washed all the interior carpeting this morning indoors, waiting for it to completely dry now. yesterday I quickly went over the carpeting inside the jeep with the shop vac then pulled the carpet and vacuumed the sheet metal below. carpet is looking new and smelling fresh again.

next step is washing the tub with a bucket of soap water then getting the carpet put back then detailing the plastics and spot cleaner washing the roll bar covering in place.

on the upside, I pulled a floor drain plug while vacuuming and looked down into the torque box/floor support and seen no rust whatsoever (y)
 
I built a hinge reinforcement bracket and then drilled through the tailgate to run the carrier bolts all the way through and added a 3/16 steel reinforcement on the inside of the tailgate. I also weed up the factory carrier so it is much stronger as well. Kind of a poor man's MoRyde setup.

I use marine grease for just about everything. I figure, it’s good for under water, it has to help with rain and snow! 🤷‍♂️
Exactly... PLUS, if my Jeep ends up like this guy at least I know my front sway bar wont squeak anymore haha
