06 TJ will not run in reverse

Oh, you replaced the outer cover on the wiring? If the issue it's from damage to the wiring harness, replacing the cover over frayed wiring isn't going to help. Are the gauges behaving normally when it tries to die? Maybe a video will help. Need to figure out if it's an electrical "the engine quits" issue or a mechanical "the engine is being dragged down to the point of stalling" kind of issues.

one of the items discussed earlier in the post was the fact I was having some other issues dealing with the Crankshaft position sensor and the Camshaft position sensor coded when the engine had overheated, one suggestion was to look at the loom to see if it has deteriorated, I did inspect the wire for damage and I did not find any damage, so I installed the new loom and changed the sensors. none of the gauges acted up, all was normal. I don't believe that it is load related because it would reverse normally some times and some times it would stutter when backing up and some times it would just stall as soon as it goes into reverse. since I have bought the jeep in March I have changed the transmission filter and fluid, the old fluid looked and smelled fine and there were no metal fines on the magnet.

It would be real tough to visually spot the damage. Did you ever grab the harness and move it around while it's running?

Just getting back to finding time to work on jeep, I have replaced the loom on several wiring harnesses around the engine block and decided to really look at the sensors on the transmission to see if they were contaminated with oily dirt build up. the sensors on the transmission looked good, loom was in good shape and no build up of oily dirt, but when I got to the speed sensor at the outlet of the transfer case (at drive shaft) it was packed with oily dirt and took some time to clean it up well enough to be able to pull the connector apart. on the sensor itself, on the inside where the pins are located was half filled with a greenish oily substance, so I pulled the sensor and cleaned it out and also cleaned the wire connector side which had some wire insulation deteriorating. after cleaning it all up I put it back together and went for a ride, well now the sensor was not working because I was not getting a speed indication. ordered new sensor and installed. the issue with the jeep having issues while driving forward seem to have gone away, but I still have the issue with reverse. Not at first but after more than 5o miles driving I have intermittent reverse issues. no power in reverse!!! if I give it gas it will stutter and kill, will start right back up and will go in reverse with slowly applying gas as it backs up but if I give it too much gas it will stutter and try to kill. looking for suggestions!!! The transmission is not slipping while in reverse.

First off I would suggest replacing the connector at the speed sensor. The green slimy stuff is corrosion caused by water intrusion into the connector. There is a very good chance the terminals in the connector have lost tension and are not getting a good contact with the sensor. This can cause high resistance in those circuits.
Do you have any codes? If you have access to a good scanner that shows live data, I would monitor your Cam and crank sensor data. both sensors should be reading rpm's. See if either one drops out in reverse.
Like Blaine said check your wiring harness behind the valve cover for any damage/chafing. You could have a wire that is broken or corroded inside the insulation itself. with the vehicle running, massage the harness and see if anything happens. Also check the harness going to crank sensor itself.
Then there is also the possibility you may have a torque converter problem.

Well I have finally had the time to start stripping loom from the wire harness that comes around the back side of the engine block to the computer. and low and behold after pulling loom and tape from around the bundle of wires I found one wire that felt funny, one side was flat, when I could get in there and clean it up sure enough there was missing insulation and I could see the wire, which apparently when I would give it gas and the engine would torque it would ground that wire to the valve cover edge and cause the engine to shut down are attempt to shut down. I re insulated that wire, and continued to examine the rest of the wires in that bundle in the same area. it was the only one that was damaged. re wrapped the wire bundle and installed new loom, installed all the parts I removed to allow me access to the wires. Started the jeep and it has not looked back, full power all around, runs like a new jeep. I will continue replacing loom on all the wire harnesses now that I have plenty of 3 different sizes. Gentleman I appreciate all the advice and help with the jeep.

Well I took all the looms off wires looked good. So I we under jeep with it running started wiggling the crank sensor. It died. So I worked on those wires cleaning and stuff. Started jeep again and noticed the bell housing moving. And then I noticed a bolt missing from bell housing. All that work and found out. Bell housing was loose. Put new bolt in bell housing and tighten up the rest and it’s fixed. Now I’ve got to rewrap those wires. But thank goodness it’s fixed
