1 inch wheel spacers

I would like to use 1 inch or less wheel spacers to give just enough clearance so the next size up tire (285/75-16) will not rub. I don’t want to have to cut the studs down. I have noted that the Moabs have recesses between the mounting holes on the flange that look like they would clear studs that stick out a bit beyond the mounting plane. Has anyone tried this?

I did wheel spacers on a pickup once, 3/4" or 1", to accommodate 35s.
Was sweet for a couple of months then one day I turned the wheel (luckily just in a parking lot) and snapped off 3 studs
Haven't used spacers since.
Might be different with a lighter Jeep, I don't know.
