My son and I recently purchase a 1998 4.0 automatic TJ with 235k miles for a project. We had to replace the frame which was a pretty intensive job but it’s finally complete. We started driving the Jeep and notice a shudder in the transmission when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. I found a 32rh 1996 dodge van transmisssion with 118k miles for $300 but i not sure if this is compatible with our TJ.
My choice is to get the transmisssion rebuilt for about $1500-$1800 or buy a used low miles transmisssion.
Has anybody used or converted a dodge van 32rh rear wheel transmission to a TJ four wheel drive by switching the output shafts?

How is your 32RH's TV (torque valve) cable adjusted? This is AKA the kick-down cable that downshifts the transmission into 2nd when you step down on the gas pedal like to pass a car.

This cable's length needs to be adjusted properly or the transmission will not shift properly. It needs its length adjusted just so the slack is removed from the cable where it attaches to the throttle lever on the throttle body. It should not be tighter than that or abrupt shifting can be the result. Just adjust it so the slack is gone but the cable is not actually being pulled when the throttle is at its idle position.

Mine is slacky even at gas pedal side. My gas pedal gas pretty big free travel until real engage throttle open. On my thread someone said to losen it so i pulled out hand made aluminium clamp at throttle body side cable. I made it with second cable which is central.

Also i guess eventhough my cluster is in kms the odometer is in miles. Today i clearly made 30-35 distance ride but odo showed only 10 kms or miles, if its miles i already have 338k kms, no wonder i have problems with transmission

Adjust the cable length again so there is no slack, and that the cable is not tight enough to be constantly pulling when you are not stepping down onto the gas pedal.

Sorry if i am too dumb but are we talking about cable 2 from this pic? It has lead or aluminium ball end i just made aluminium "clamp" spring thing and putted it between ball end and plastic. I couldnt came up with any other ideas about adjusting cable 2, but cable 1 has its own adjusting mechanism with button. hqdefault.webpmaxresdefault (10).webp
