2.5 YJ engine intoTJ?

So I bought a 99 TJ for $1200 with blown engine.

Frame and floors great. Reason I bought Jeep was I scrapped my 95 after body and frame succumbed to NY weather. I saved everything but body and frame. The 99 came with complete engine rebuild kit for the 2.5 sitting on passenger seat. I figured I would just drop my 95 2.5 into the 99 but it is not direct swap according to interchange info. Now my question is it looks like the differences are intake and the 95 engine having sensor in head. Can I just block off sensor and swap intakes? Then of course use 99 wiring harness. The reason for just not rebuilding is I got word back from machine shop the head has major crack and block will most likely require machining.

Could you try a wrecking yard for a used 2.5 engine out of a TJ?

I cannot tell you positively, but it seems logical, if you can make the 95 engine as identical as the 99 as possible, and use the 99 electronics. So essentially turning your 95 engine into a 99.

Personally I would be stubborn enough to try it myself. but I have nothing but time hehe. Also what would be the cost if it doesn't work? Finding a newer intake manifold? The sensor on the head is to sense something so if isn't being used in the newer version then it is unnecessary, but make sure that, that is the only differences, because you will want all of the sensors available for the 99. Meaning make sure there are holes for all of the sensors in the 95 for the 99. Should be pretty easy to do especially with the engines out.

BTW that is a nice looking Jeep, I would have probably paid twice that for that if I had found it.

I'm pretty certain that the amount of people who have done this swap is few and far between. You're trying to swap in a 2.5 from a YJ into a TJ. I'm sure a lot of it is similar, but as you're discovering, there are some differences. I agree with what @ac_ said.

I think that you're going to need to go through the wiring and every little bit piece by piece to see what's different and what's not. It sounds like you may already know, but there's likely more things hiding I suspect.

Personally if it was me, I would find a 2.5 engine from a TJ and put it in. It will be much easier and less of a headache. You can find them for really cheap at http://car-part.com which does a search of every wrecking yard within X miles of your location.

So I️ broke down the 95 engine and basically the numbers are identical on the head and block to the 99. I️ am in the process getting the head done and new pistons pressed on. I️ will use the good 95 head and block with every other part off the 99. The sensors are all different plugs but will be transferring all that over anyways. I️ will update after I️ get it back together.
