I just bought a Tj recently, it's a manual transmission. When I got it, I noticed that when I put it in reverse sometimes it would pop out if i didn't hold the gear shifter. A month later now I am having issues with the transmission. The gear shifter is very stiff and doesn't move as freely as it used to. Sometimes when i go to put it in 2nd gear it won't go into gear. Ive heard that it could be issues with the linkage or the synchros. I am hesitant to change the transmission fluid. Ive heard redline is a good option. Just wondering if anyone else has had this same issue with their TJ before. Let me know!

  • Both the AX15 and NV3550 use a shift linkage that can wear over time, causing the issues you’re experiencing with stiff shifting and the gear popping out of reverse. If the linkage is out of adjustment or the bushings are worn, it can cause binding or difficulty engaging gears, including reverse and 2nd.
  • Quick Fix: Inspect the shift linkage for wear or misalignment, and check the bushings. It’s easier to check the AX15 linkage as it has a simpler design, while the NV3550's linkage may be more intricate.

Ok thank you I appreciate it! I sprayed the linkage with WD 40. But I will check for worn out bushings.

Another issue I have seen is if someone has installed a skid plate drop kit, or body lift it can cause interference between the tub and shifter.
