I'm having automatic transmission issues in a 2006 TJ. Seems to be a 1-2 problem. If I'm sitting at a complete stop, sometimes it won't go when i give it gas. I have to let off the gas and then gradually give it gas for it to go. Other times I drop it into neutral and back to drive for it to catch and take off. I just picked it up from the shop and they are recommending a reman or rebuild. I just had a rebuild four years ago and two years ago I had a transmission cooler installed because it was running hot. Here are the codes the shop pulled. Looking at these codes, does a rebuild or new transmission look to be the only option?

PO700 TRANS CONTROL FAULT
PO714 TRANS TEMPSENSOR
P1776 LOW REV SOL.STUCK
P1790 A-SHIFT FAULT VALVE BODY TEMP SENSOR FAULT

Thanks!

Thanks!

I will reach out to Mark at WranglerFix. Hopefully replacing the PCM will resolve the issue.

The PCM has been received and installed from Wranglerfix.com. I can tell that the Jeep is running much better. The engine initially had a very rough idle that is now smooth and when driving the Jeep it is a better ride. However it did not solve my transmission issues. I am now receiving the following codes after driving it.

P0841 Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch A Circuit
P0731 Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio
P0700 Transmission Control System

I am by no means an expert on anything 42RLE related, but I believe the 700 code is a generic transmission code which is usually accompanied by some other transmission codes....which you also have. The 0731 code is basically reporting that the input & output shafts aren't spinning at an expected ratio. This could be the code related to you giving it gas but it not going anywhere. And the 0841 is obviously a problem with a switch or a sensor.

MY THEORY: you've got a bad switch or solenoid or other "valve body problem" that is causing there to be not enough pressure to engage a band or clutches, causing the transmission to slip. So I think I would chase down the P0841 code first. Could be a sensor, could be gunk in the valve body, could be a sticky valve... but if you can resolve it, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the P0731 & your symptoms are then also resolved. The valve body work, if not done by you, should be considerably cheaper than a full rebuild. You might also drain the fluid and see what condition its in, and if there is any evidence of a problem in the pan.

But I know nothing, and this post is worth precisely what you paid for it (since you're not a supporting member, lol).

Following up on an old post. I ended going with a rebuild. Three different shops recommended rebuild. However when I got the Jeep back, it was still doing the same thing after the rebuild. The shop said that the new solenoid they installed was faulty so they replaced it. I personally believe they used the original solenoid in the rebuild. So I believe John's theory was correct, bad solenoid. Thanks for all the insight!

If they re-used the solenoid in the rebuild I'd want to know if they re-used the clutches & seals too. Also I've literally never heard of a car being taken to a transmission shop where a rebuild wasn't recommended, so the only thing we really know is that you visited 3 transmission shops. ;).

And it's just like @John Cooper to steal credit for a diagnosis on a thread he didn't even reply in. :ROFLMAO:

The solenoid pack would not be part of a standard rebuild just as hard parts are usually extra. Now if they had diagnosed it may have gotten fixed for just the solenoid pack.

Now that I ha e been drug into this thread, what are we discussing....

How you suggested it was the solenoid in the first place. Unless it was some other John.

But I couldn’t imagine going through the work to remove the VB on a 20 yr old jeep and not do the solenoids.

Hmm I don't seem to recall saying that, maybe it was on a mushroom night... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
