2006 Exhaust Pre Cat Recommendations

I'm going to take a look at them later today, my jeep is pretty rust free only has 75K mile on it and is always in a garage and rarely out in the winters.

So I should look at picking some of these up?

I did order this set just in case i decide to tackle it as well.

save your money and forget the stubby for this job. I would add a long 3/8 in extension if you don't already have one.

me either, but I've seen enough threads here on people going through hell to get them loose. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic and am used to having to break my arm in 3 places to reach a bolt and this was no trouble for me and I still have every imaginable combination of extensions and sockets.

Nice, I fixed Tomcats and Superhornets. There were some fun times trying to get the impossible done.

You don’t need a swivel or a stubby. I use a 12 point 15mm but I don’t recall what size fit the stock fasteners (might be 15mm as well but I’d double check).

The ratchet wrench is my go to on that job and I’ve pulled my cats four times in the past few years working on the turbo, rear main seal, and oil pump.

You can use a combination of sockets and extensions (possibly swivel sockets or adaptors as well), but I found that it’s not necessary or preferred.

If the fastener is on their really good just add a second wrench on the open end of the wrench for leverage.

I used a long extension and swivel on all mine except one and was able to get it from up top with a ratchet wrench.

I remember having trouble getting to a fastener…btw, I only prefer the ratchet wrench for this bc it fits between all the congestion that exists up in that area on my rig.

The longer extension would likely help get good leverage if the original bolts are being a pain to get out.

Have plenty of extensions already. I'll order a 15mm rachet wrench. I'm having everything overnighting. This may be me trying the install after all. I'm ordering a variety of M10-1.5 bolts in different lengths as well.

if you haven't already start spraying your bolts and 02 sensors now to help with getting them out....

Update! So far the only items giving me difficulty are the O2 sensors. Rest of the bolts came out with little to no effort. Definitely found the source of my rattle. Other side is still in place but deteriorated. I found it strange, but all 4 of the bolts up at the pre cats were barely tight at all. Took almost no force to get them out.

I would buy new from RA or Amazon and call it a day.

Alternatively, put the exhaust in a vice or maybe drive your tire up on the exhaust to hold it down if you don’t have a vice.

I have new coming but they won’t be here until Monday. Was going to try and stick with the old ones until I need to swap them out. I was able to get one of them out so far. Other one is a little stubborn.

I’ve never had my check engine light on for anything cat related and no exhaust leaks.

It's good to have the info @LONGJP2 shared so you can tighten them up if you get the code moving forward. My 15mm ratcheting wrench currently lives in my rig in case I need to tighten them up again after the most recent reinstall.

Didn’t feel like waiting till Monday for my sensors, so ran down to local parts store and grab 2 ntk sensors. Just waiting on the new mopar nuts for the exhaust manifold now. Should be here tomorrow.

For anyone else who reads this, removing the 4 bolts at the pre cats with this socket makes it a breeze.

I wonder which style of swivel socket is preferred in general. I haven’t used either enough to know which is superior for its strength, achieving max angle, or smaller footprint.

I bought 14mm version of this to do the exhaust manifold but haven’t used it yet.

Update: Boostwerk's titanium fasteners didn't fit inside the 14mm...I had to use a 9/16 instead (14.3mm).

Well the jeep is all back together and took it for a test ride. Probably one of the least problematic times I’ve had working on jeeps! The third cat sits pretty close to the exhaust hanger on the trans mount. May have to make some adjustments if it starts hitting it, but it’s good for now.
