42RLE Rebuild Strategy

He fixed me up with a pan and bung- not installed yet
Had you opted for the deluxe version, it would have looked like this.

You are reading the trans temp. That is the only temp that matters.

I have my gauge in the pan like everybody else, but why isn’t the temp as it’s leaving the transmission the important one? A quick google tells me that ATF starts to break down at 240F. Say it gets to 250 while in use, and also say my cooler drops it by 20 degrees. When it returns to the pan my gauge will show 230, and I’ll think I’m fine when in actuality it’s running too hot.

What’s the flaw in my reasoning here?

I used a glowshift Transmission Temperature gauge (2 years in, no issues). I’m sure lots of people will recommend Auto Meter. Follow your heart. You will have to wire it in once you get a pan with a bung in it.

There’s a how to write up for putting the derale cooler under your jeep. I put a Hayden in front of my radiator and it hasn’t affected my running temp one bit, and I live in Texas.

I put heater hose on the v brace and did the Hayden too.

The autometer’s main shortcoming is the light feature - needs an led bulb. I know its dated but so is the rig.

This is a repeat but its worth repeating-

57,000.00 miles and here is what killed my trans:

Someone got happy using silicone on the pan

A piece got loose

It made its way into the valve body and plugged 1-2

This took out the TC

This sent metal into it and got the plates

At that point it overheated, shifted so soft you could not feel it and drank fuel.

This all got worse fast the last 2500 miles -

I’m no transmission whiz at all, and really don’t pay a lot of attention to how they are working- until they don’t. I had no clue it was failing til the codes started.

Also you can’t tell much about a T/C driving one. You can tap the brake at cruise speed and see it let the rpm jump but not much else.

Not to answer for Blaine, he has input on that.... but even at that point my highest reading has been 165-170. Sort of surprised me.

Before long I can tell you what the pan reading will be- and the difference between that the line out temp I get now.

Thinking I’ll run it 1000-2500 before I change it.

The flaw is similar to trying to predict how hot your engine is running by reading the flame front temp in the cylinder when the fuel air mixture explodes. That is the hottest part of what the motor is doing but does not tell you how well the cooling system is working. You want to know how hot the engine is when it is running just like you want to know how hot the transmission is when it is running. Knowing the temp of the ATF when it leaves the converter after doing the most work it will and enduring the most punishment it sees is no indicator of how hot the trans is. It can also lead you to try and overcool the trans or not believe your coolers are working properly.

Is this pan something you are going to sell on the Black Magic Brake site
No
or is it special made for favorite cronies?
Not really.

I'll do the brazed in sender bung for most anyone. Works out to about 50 bucks. 30 for the work, average 20 for shipping back to you. I don't acquire them, you send one to me. We don't paint, we just braze in the bung, chase the threads with a good tap, and put it back in the box it came in to ship back.

For the record-

My end cost was 3760.00

Performance? Best 42 transmission I’ve driven.

The shifts are smooth and the shift points are obvious- you can feel it going through the gears as you should.

The way it pulls at very low rpm is great- which helps with a 42, even if it has 5:38 gears.

I can’t stay out of the jeep .....It is so much more enjoyable to drive.

Not mushy and vague like before.

If I had to do it again I’d want the same build.

Local shop? What went into it? Shift kit, etc?

Cole’s Auto Repair, Huntsville. He is like 24 and will blow your mind what he knows for his age.

Billet Torque Converter, Billet Shift Pistons, Transgo Kit, Gauge and Cooler.

Blaine’s pan is en rte.

Don't arbitrarily assume respect for work level/skill and mutual appreciation for Jeep and life philosophies for cronyism. You would be very far from the reality if you are doing that.

Did not mean to offend. I looked up the word on Google before using and it said "friend". Just an effort on my part at humor. Please accept my apology AndyG and mrblaine.

Exactly. What Blaine works for is money. Or at least he uses it to finance his passion for solving the next problem.

No offense taken here. I can’t even get Blaine in a romantic mood no matter how I try.

Sorta but not really in this case. It takes about 30 minutes start to finish. The SS weld in bungs are 5.20 each, silver solder and flux are about 2 bucks, plus packing and a shipping label. If we hurry, we make 40 bucks an hour which is barely wages. I do it mainly because very few that silver braze as well as I do are available to do it.

Also why I don't have them as a product. Once I buy the pans and stock them, there is no way they are leaving without being stripped and powdercoated. That would put the pan around 150 bucks shipped and I might make 30% on it.

Quitter.

Some of us are not motivated by money. It's important, yes, but there are other things that are far more important. Given what I've seen you write about your business and work style, I think you would understand.

Hence my second sentence.

Getting to know him a little, I was blown away at how structured he was, his work ethic, his responsiveness and action to solve problems….he inspires me to be better at what I do. To be more engaged.

Money seems to work better as a result, not a goal. Like tennis, the score is a result of hitting the ball over the net. Hitting the ball over the net is the goal.

Serving the client well, producing the best quality, being cleaner , etc are beautiful goals. Money is a crappy goal, and people can sense when others are in the game just for the money.

Blaine could school people on good service. He will get you a solution and have it on the way to you faster than you can get your credit card out.

So strange then that you had Blaine on your ignore list for so many years. It's nice to see that you got over yourself.
