42RLE stuck in reverse

so i crank the jeep this morning cause it’s supposed to be icy roads this evening and overnight. put jeep in reverse and back up. when i went to put it in drive the shifter moves back and forth but remains in reverse. even when in park. does the shifter have a cable or linkage? hoping it’s an easy fix as i have no real experience with automatic transmissions. any thoughts or suggestions to look into on my next days off? thanks in advance.

Is the shifter sloppy? Like it just moves back and forth with very little effort and doesn’t “click” into each gear?

If so it could be the o-ring/bushing on the shifter has fallen off. This happened to me about a week after I bought my Jeep. I just used a zip tie to hold it back in place and it has worked just fine for the last 5 years. They do sell replacement bushings for it, it is a good idea to keep a spare in the Jeep.

Should be on the driver side.

yes, it seems like the shifter is disconnected from the transmission. thanks i’ll give it a look on next day off.

I suggest you buy two, one to put on and throw one in your glove box it comes in handy.

I forgot to add that in the mean time you can temporarily zip tie the cable connector to the lever if it did indeed come off.

bushing came in the mail today and eugene the jeep is back on the road. a whole $9.11 a piece, picked up an extra to reside in the glove box. thanks guys for the expert help.
