I just recently bought a 97 TJ 150,000 miles drove it home and the guy I got it off of we had to jump it because the battery was shot well I was gonna go buy a new battery so I figured I would just take the jeep well i coast started it down my driveway in reverse and it started but I went to put in gear and my gear shifter will not move I got it to my garage and took the shift boot off so si I could see down in there in my gear shifter is stuck in the reverse position when I let the clutch out it doesn’t do anything and you can see the shaft spinning down inside the gearbox but just makes noises and will not move and you cannot put it in any gear has anyone ever experienced anything like this

Check the plunger under the driver side of the transmission. Also check your brake fluid since it uses some of that in the clutch area.

I see this is old, but I just stumbled upon it.

Did you get this sorted out?

The clutch has its own hydraulic fluid reservoir, it doesn't use any brake fluid from the brake reservoir. Yes this is responding to an old post....
