Does anyone know if its possible to have the slide-type HVAC controller from a '98 rebuilt? My entire A/C system has been replaced in the last 2 years, with the exceptions of the controller, vacuum modules + lines, fan switch, or behind-the-dash wiring. I've followed one of the other thread's write-ups to test all the wiring and as best I can tell, my problem lies within the controller. When I put a voltmeter on it and test for continuity across the various modes, there isn't any. To be more specific, I think the problem lies inside the controller. There are multiple copper bands and two little floating connectors that are held in position by tiny springs. I think those are what are causing the connectivity problems. I'd rather not spend $100 on another used controller off of eBay, but that looks like the only option unless someone knows of a fabricator/specialty shop (?) that could rebuild this sort of thing. Any thoughts? I live in Thailand and its effin hot here. A/C would be nice...thanks!

I haven't heard of anyone who services the early model, slider-style AC controls. But I would be surprised if you could get it done for less than the $100 you mention for a used one. Also, if you are able to find a used controller for $100, I think that's a good deal. They're rare and hard to come by.

One option might be to look for one with some cosmetic damage, or broken mounting bracket, and buy it for parts. Between it and your current one, you might be able to put together a working one.

I have never disassembled a TJ slider control so I'm not sure what's involved and what parts are in there. That being said, I have seen slider controls for mid-70's GM/Oldsmobiles be "refreshed" by opening them up and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser then adding a little dielectric grease. Supposedly worked like a charm.

Got any pics of what's going on inside the slider?

These are the two halves of the section with the circuitry and before cleaning last fall. Cleaned and applied dielectric grease and it worked for a while then crapped out again. The half on the right has two copper pieces, on a rectangle and one a triangle, that have dimples on them. They are pushed up for positive contact with the strips of copper on the other half by tiny little springs. This is a 98 and I think the springs are just worn out. They form bridges between the copper strips and allow for continuity between the different hvac modes. This is the section that I can’t get continuity between in any of the modes. This goes to the 4-prong electrical connector that goes out to the fan switch, a/c, ground, and power in from the pdc.
