I just recently installed a rebuilt 32rh in my 99 wrangler and I can't get the thing to go into park. I have even removed the shift cable and tried by hand but I can only feel 5 positions and not the 6th. The shifter itself will go into park when the cable is disconnected and where it hooks would be correct if the transmission shift lever had 1 more position. Help please

If there is a warranty take it back. If there isn't then @hear to the courtesy desk 😂

I had a whole thing typed up and then I realized you said it would go into park if you disconnected the linkage, so at the risk of being that guy, it would appear the problem is with the linkage.

The linkage bracket itself is keyed to the shift selector shaft, so it will only go on one way. And with the shifter cable correctly in all its bracketry (which you would have messed with during a transmission install), it will locate the shifter in the cab. Putting it in park will rotate the shaft clockwise when viewed from the top.

There is a bracket like this on the driver's side bellhousing where the shifter cable passes through. You can't see it in this picture, but there is this "finger type spring" thing that holds it in that bracket. If that thing isn't seated the whole way, then I can see it not allowing the cable to move far enough "back" to allow it to get to park....I think. I believe there is an adjustment at the shifter itself, but I've never had to touch it. Regardless, this is 100% a cable adjustment problem.

Oh balls.

Well the TL;DR from what I wrote was to just roll the car slightly while trying to put it into park. You need the output shaft to rotate just a little to let the park rod through. Happens all the time when installing a valve body, and installing the VB is very similar to what happens when you put it into park.

I have one decent reason why this might work, and then pretty much every car on the road as evidence why it shouldn’t matter.
