Adjusting and replacing rear drum brakes

Hello.
I finally had to replace my rear drum shoes. I decided to get a new hardware kit and drums. Last week I felt/heard a grinding sound in the right rear. Turns out the emergency brake cable broke off and was floating around. Now to my question. Does the adjuster bracket need to be in contact with the teeth on the adjuster. I may not be used the right terms. After assembly I can turn the adjustment screw to expand and retract the shoes but it doesn’t click. In the pic the bracket is gold in color. Does it only engage when the emergency brake is used?

It engages when you apply the brakes while the vehicle is moving in reverse.

Yes, it should be in contact with the wheel. There is a great thread on here with pictures that explains exactly how each bit needs to be installed. The reason I know, I went threw the same thing.

Looks like you need to get the portion of the piece that the green spring is in, on top of the adjuster bracket.

You can see the difference in these photos.

Just a follow up thanks. Finished the brakes last night. Everything in perfect and working great.
