Advice on 91 XJ

I’m picking up a 91 XJ Sport, 4.0 with 239K on the clock in TX and will be driving it home to WA. I need advice on any fluids, parts, etc, I should carry along the way. I’m flying down so I’m limited on what I can take with me. I’m planning to change all fluids before making the drive.

I’m also planning to sleep in it on the way home (3 nights), so if anyone has suggestions for a setup in an XJ that would be great.

Nice. What does she look like? 2 door 4 door? I would go with the normal tj fluids that should be changed being they are the same motor. Fold that back seat down and bring an air mattress should be comfy.

Engine oil (RMS), coolant, trans fluid, a reliable tire pressure guage, check the spare, like actually pull it out and check it. Check the pressure, check the date on it.

Check the u-joints. Maybe an air filter.

You can buy fluids once you have the keys to it. Autopart stores are a dime a dozen.

This is for my daughter's 16 birthday. I'm going to remove the stupid faded orange pinstripe, get under it and make sure any surface rust is dealt with (frame is in good condition), run through all the maintenance, float the exterior clear to shine it all up, paint the bumpers, start taking the interior apart and cleaning it all up, then....after months of doing that...

3" lift and 31's. Mild but nice. Take it off-road!

Should be a fun father-daughter project!

Yeah, the 2-Doors are really cool, and rare as far as I can tell. If it doesn't work out for us I'll just get it all fixed up and sell it and get another TJ! I don't see how I can lose since I'm getting this one for the cost of the brand new tires, $400

Awesome. Killer price ! Great to see men doing things with their kids. Be sure to update us with your progress on here. I've taken a liking to the 2 doors myself. Congrats!

Granted, I'm a bit biased but you're going to like that Jeep! I have an '89 white 2 dr. Limited (see below).

Your '91 is the first of the Chrysler "non- RENIX" XJ's. I'm not fussy about that but some people are. RENIX Jeeps have some peculiarities (electrical sensors, closed cooling system, etc.) but a lot of us like them. With it you have the 4.0 HO (high output engine). I'd have to look up the differences but they're minor … 7 HP or something silly. At the end of 1989 I bought a 1990 4 dr. black with burgundy interior XJ Laredo. I had no idea it would be the last year for the RENIX Jeeps but I didn't care. I got what I wanted and it was great!

Yours has the correct 10 hole wheels with the rivets (they don't have a name) and they look to be in good shape. Hang on to them if you like them; if not you can get a good price for them, maybe even get all of your money back! I have them on my MJ and for some reason non-Jeep people go nuts over them. That "Sport" strip is original too. It might grow on you.

I haven't slept in my current XJ but I did in my original one. I'm not tall so it was OK with a small air mattress. XJ's don't have an interior tailgate handle so you'll have to crawl out one of the front doors. You might then wish you bought 4 dr. (lol). NO YOU WON'T! About 4 dr's., the rear doors are a pain in the butt to get in and out of (very small). The much longer doors of a 2 dr. are actually quite nice.

I would like some black wheels. I’m not too fond of black on most colors, but I do like it on white.

The easiest way to tell if it's a RENIX is probably to pop the hood and see if it has a relay centre on the passenger's side. Look for the 2 yellow relays and a plastic panel held down by 2 small swivel nuts. The cover and nuts sometimes go missing but the relays should be there. Also, if it still has an closed cooling system it will have a plastic pressurized bottle just behind the relay centre. XJ's are often converted to an open system though and an overflow bottle is used.

If yours is a '91 you shouldn't have any of what is shown on mine below.
