Advice on streaking windshield wipers

I recently noticed that m wipers were not doing a great job, and decided to replace them. Easy enough, but i've noticed since i did so that the driver side did not improve like i had expected it to, it still leaves streaks. I thought at first i had just gotten a lemon, so i went back to the parts store and got them to swap it for another, but it has not fixed the issue at all.

As it seemed VERY unlikely i'd get TWO lemons in a row, i have started examining the wiper arm itself more thoroughly, and found a potential issue. It seems as if the arm itself is not exerting enough pressure to have the blade rest completely against the windshield. The very ends of the blade are slightly lifted from the windshield, and when i use the wipers it still leaves significant streaks all across the driver side.

What i would like to know is, is there a way to tighten it in any way so that the arm exerts more pressure against the windshield, or do i maybe need to replace the wiper arm itself? There is no other issue with the wiper functions, they run normally otherwise.

Replace the arm, the springs are really not easily replaced...and good wipers dont need a lot of pressure...

Sure sounds like you've located the problem, the wiper arm is the culprit. I know of no fix other than replacing the arm itself.

I think the name is the same as something we used to buy for the kids when they were at least little if not newborn.

Anyway for the price they seem like a fairly good idea and remind me of my parents driver side wiper on the 1972 Dodge.

If my local Napa has them i'll probably try those first, simply due to cost. If they don't work i'm out 4 bucks and i'll have to wait for them to be shipped, at least the tensioner idea can be picked up immediately (again, if they have them). Plus i really need to go into that Napa anyway and tell them i was wrong and that the wiper they replaced was not in fact faulty. I was wrong there, and i have to pay for it (literally).

If you're going to Napa and plan on paying for the last wiper maybe you'll get lucky enough that they still have it. Not only could it be a spare, they also come in handy to defog the inside of any flat window really quick.

If anyone needs to know where i got this idea, I replaced my wiper blades on my rusty Beetle back in the mid 80s and had the old ones sitting on the passenger seat when defogging was needed because all the heat went out through the rust holes. Ahh... the good old days.

My wipers seem to just melt the rubber off the ends, but leave the middle all streaky.

Bend the arm in towards the windshield?

Are you sure they are all the way down on the pins properly?

I would begin by cleaning the windshield and the edge of the blade with denatured alcohol.

Stockli, you were right. I can't believe i didn't realize it. When i replaced the wipers, i raised the arms to the 90 degree angle to more easily access them, and at that time i popped the arm off. When i put it on, i didn't realize i hadn't fully seated it, and it has never been 100% in place the rest of the time. I also didn't realize the pin wouldn't lock all the way in place if i didn't have the arm in the 90 degree angle.

Well, i feel stupid, but hey, i've learned something. Fuck me though, all that trouble and searching and i didn't have to do anything else other than re-seat the arm.

Wiper snuggies from napa work great on this issue, I have had mine for years now.
