Jerry, sorry if this is a dumb question but will this fit any jeep TJ? I may have to order the parts myself if my shop cant get them from their supplier (assuming this is the problem) but not sure if it depends on what axles or engine size etc that I have. Assuming this is for your front driveshaft, this is the kit you want that includes all three required u-joints and the centering joint...

Everything is sealed so you don't have to worry about greasing anything. All non-Rubicons use these same 1310 size parts. Only the Rubicon uses different/bigger u-joints.

this job should not be more than a few hours for a mechanic correct?At 164k miles it definitely wouldn't be a bad idea.
I dunno what kind of a mechanic he is. If he is not a driveshaft specialist, I'd take the driveshaft to a pure driveshaft specialty shop. There are a half-dozen within 20 miles of my house and 3-4 within 10 miles. They're better and faster at that job, and likely cheaper.
Not to mention most general purpose garages don't do that work anyway, they just run any driveshafts they receive over to a driveshaft shop and then mark up the cost.

ok guys... update. its been about 3 weeks now and no more chirping noise.. it was the rear u joint, not the front.
they said the front was fine and did not change it even though I said they could if they wanted too but they dont like to replace things if they are fine and I respect that.
Jerry, unfortunately they did not put in the parts I wanted that you recommended. They put in ones that are grease-able. that is what they had on hand and use routinely and that they have good luck with plus if anything is wrong, they warrant their work for parts failures as long as I use the parts they use.
now I have this nagging rattle/knocking sound that no one can seem to find. I checked evertthing I can see and grab underneath and all is tight. they checked it for me too when on the lift and all is tight. I banged on every possible thing I can inside and outside the jeep and cant recreate the noise.. jumping up and down on bumpers, silence. they only thing the shop said it may be that they can think of is a bushing or mount somewhere but no one can recreate the noise. short of having them take everything apart and or replacing bushings etc. I will learn to live with the noise.
could be a shock mount, who knows. but glad the chirp is gone.. peace of mind with that.

I have a chirping noise also but it also has a clicking when I drive. I was told by the mechanic that he put on new you joints but that was maybe a year ago and they have failed by now I don’t do any off-road driving at all.? Is this something that I can change on my own.? What is the level of difficulty for the YouTube on skilled mechanic.?
U joints aren't terribly difficult. I learned how on my Jeep and have replaced every one and just finished the rear drive shaft earlier today. I prefer to use a hammer, sockets and a vice to change them out.
If you are doing the axle shafts, then you need a 36mm socket and a 12 point 9/16th socket to remove the unit bearing.
Although, a chirping sound, especially one that occurs when driving in a straight line, is likely a double cardan drive shaft. If your Jeep is not lifted, then this is most certainly the front.
Later TJs had their u joints glued in place. A propane torch and a half joint press is needed to replace the factory joints. The injected glue needs to be melted while you press.

I checked the alignment on my new to me 05 Sport with 102k.
The toe in was 1 1/4 inch off! ...im thinking that had to be intentional...bought from a dealer :-/
I then corrected the alignment and instantly heard chirping coming from the front going in a straight line around 40 mph.

I am replacing the 2 u joints this weekend along with new Timken front hub bearings.
