hi, read up on this and mine has that exact sound but not sure its the U joints. if it were the U joints wouldnt it do it all the time ? also, seems to go away if wet out and does it more over bumps. it seems if I pull up on the transfer case lever a bit its not as bad. I am starting to think its something to do with that. I do not notice it if I put it in 4 hi either. any ideas of what may be the cause.

First things first, lube all the grease fittings under the vehicle and see if that makes a difference at all.

Sounds like it could be u-joints.

It could also be the centering yoke in the double cardan joint on the front driveshaft. That was the cause on mine after one too many dips in a mud pit.

thanks.. so this can be an intermittent noise if any of the joints?? nothing in the transfer case lever than can cause this? I can almost get it to not make that noise if I hold up on the lever just a little bit..

I can't think of how the lever itself would be making such a noise... Guess it wouldn't hurt to get under there and look around. Have someone lift it up and attempt to make the noise while you are under the Jeep looking up at the lever. See if you can identify where the noise (if any at all) might be coming from.

Shot mine is doing the same thing gomna pull the front shaft friday

When a front ds I had on a 2006 TJ did this, it was only apparent at slower speeds, like when coming to a stop. Centering ball on mine was definitely shot, though, and a new one was the fix. I read more than one post that said if that cv joint fails it can damage your transfer case and/or the front differential.

Moisture can act as a lubricant to quiet/reduce the squeaking coming from the front driveshaft's CV joint, so can pulling it into 4x4 to put a load on the CV. Like a door may squeak under no load but go away if you hang on the door.

The CV joint can be rebuilt for less than the cost of a new driveshaft, that is for sure. Make sure to go for the sealed Spicer 5-1310x u-joints and the sealed version of the CV joint. Contrary to some misconceptions, sealed u-joints are stronger and more durable than the greasable versions with the zerk in the body like the Spicer 5-153x u-joint.

ok, definitely seeing a pattern. I still think it has to do with my transfer case lever somewhere.. When its in the down position (not in 4wd), I noticed that the lever can still go down about another inch if I put pressure on it but then it slowly come back up about an inch and that is its natural down position if I dont mess with it. when I push the lever down that extra inch, there is resistance and you can tell the lever wants to come back up an inch.when its in that natural position is when I get that chirping ,kind of like a squeal but more of a chirp sound when accelerating from a stop and sometimes over bumps. If I push down on the lever to where it goes down all the way, I dont hear that sound as often, almost 90 percent of the time it makes that noise go away.

I read somewhere online where two other people had the same chirping noise and it ended up being something with the transfer case shifter but cant find those posts anymore. I think the one person said there was a bad bushing, worn out or something. I am wondering if it just needs some sort of an adjustment. anyone else notice their lever will push down a bit further than where it naturally wants to stop?

I did spray from underneath all the parts I can see that are related to the lever but did not help. sorry for the long post but trying to be as descriptive as possible.

saw the responses re removing driveshafts etc but that is beyond my comfort level. thx

Removing drive shaft entails taking out 8 small bolts. Pretty much it, except making sure that it goes back in in the same orientation that it had before removal...

May I ask why?
I believe its to eliminate certain parts from being the problem but being that i can make the noise go away almost all of the time by pressing down harder on the transfer case lever, pretty sure it has something to do with that and not u joint etc related but not sure of how its affecting it..
