Any 4-speed manual experience here?

The tr4050 does not fit in a TJ. You have to cut a huge hole in the stock skid. Useless for any serious off-roading, impossible with any form of tummy tuck.

Does the belly of it hang down significantly further than an AX15 or the like?

Damn you...stole my thunder lol

@Zorba will have him installing a 235 inline 6, 4speed and a flip phone in no time
Nope. 305 V6 with SM-420 transmission. Pure heaven - if you could beef up the front end of a TJ enough to support the weight of that monster engine that is!

The TJs do NOT have a low enough 1st gear - although that would be partly mitigated *IF* there were a 2LO option, preferably one that was easy to shift into. Novak does make an adapter for the SM-420, but the shift tower ends up very far forward and the transmission is on the tall side, albeit VERY short. There's nothing like the sound track of an SM-420!

With all that said, for wheeling I'd want a splitter with my SM-420 - 4 speeds really isn't enough, even I realize that. The 2-3 gap is VERY wide. For pulling a trailer or other heavy loads on road, its fine. I'd still rather have a gear or two more than the 420 offers, but it works.

I'm wondering if Novak will eventually have an adapter to install the 7 speed from the new Bronco. Its 1st gear is about the same as an SM-465 - around 6.5:1. Not quite as low as the SM-420's 7+:1, but still damn low. Something that Ford got right that Jeep missed out on...

Thank you all. This feedback is why I ask the question before getting too involved down an endless rabbit hole of frustration.

Tremec is too tall.

AX needs deeper first. 3550 is only slightly better.

SM/NP/T - 4 speed gearing is too far apart and shifter is buried under the dash.

Shifter under the dash on a tj.

I'm not advocating for it, in fact already said there were better ways to skin this cat; just providing info. If somebody wants it bad enough they'll do what they need to do.

Search around re: the Toyota R series transmission. Shares a lot of parts with the ax15 and there are rumors that it might be possible to get the R151F countershaft and 4.3:1 first gear assembly into the AX15. I came across some threads about it on pirate a while back but never did find any that claimed to have a working example.

I'll look into that, thanks. I wonder if the whole trans from a toyota could be used with just a bell housing swap, or is other stuff like the input/output shafts different.

The rear housing is different so it won't bolt up to a 231. I would suspect the output shaft is probably wrong too, and I think when I was searching I read that the input shaft was different. I don't know Toyota t-cases but I believe the one that came with the r151f was passenger drop. Maybe it's possible to swap the jeep input and output and rear housing onto the Toyota box?

You can absolutely swap parts to get 4.3:1 in an ax15 but I’ll give you a dollar if you can find them available here in the USA.
