Anybody put a straight pipe on their 4.0?

My kid just cut the muffler out of the 600.00 stainless cat back system on his XJ and put a piece of flex pipe its place. It sounds like a bag of ass.
He thought he would get that crackle and pop sound on decel. I told him if that's what he wants, sell the XJ and buy a Honda.
