Anyone Installed Optic Armor?

Unfortunately my son threw a rock out of our garage and it hit the top of the garage door and ricocheted into my TJ windshield which was parked right outside. Now I've got a nice crack dead lower center of the windshield with spider going out in all ways. So, I looked into local glass replacement, $170 installed. I also ran across Optic Armor somewhere on here on the past. It's $300, and if self-installed, that it. But I read the instructions and it sounds difficult. Anyone done it?

I have never heard of it before. It looks awesome and would be worth the money if their claim is true, I am not sure if you care about this though!

also i read on an other forum that they scratch some easily from stuff like wipers or dust.

They scratch pretty easily and look like garabe over time IMO. Plus they are not DOT approved. Stick with the tried and true glass windshield

The reason it is not DOT approved I have heard in the past is that you cannot break through them if your get in an accident or fall into a river. If the glass gets pushed through the windshield, its not going to shatter and will stay an entire piece of plastic since it is harder.

However I would disagree with what Fouled talked about earlier. The owner has a video of him taking steel wool and it not scratching the window. I think this is a better product and it says its supposed to be more clear. The weight savings is all I'm really excited about.

Also, I reached out to the company and since they have a wrangler specific windshield for the TJ im hoping the install is easier

What kind of weight savings are you getting? I was mainly interested in the product because of its chip resistance.

They say if you replace the front and rear windows you get anywhere from 40-50lbs. Now the front window is usually larger than the rear so I would assume 60% weight savings over the glass equivalent. But I do not have the exact number.

I’ll give you that. It’s been years since I researched them or seen some in person. Technology in the last few years with glass, plastic, and uv protection has come a long way. The weight savings are a good benefit. Glass does just fine as a windshield IMO.

I hope he checks this forum and gets back to us on how he likes it. Even if its only 20lbs.....still worth it if the windshield holds up like they advertise. The owner also got back to me and let me know the install is easier since you don't have to trim the windshield at all. It comes ready to be installed.

I agree, I'd like to hear his long term opinion on it as well, as it's an option I'd consider too!

Not in the market for a windshield, but I really appreciate your feedback. We don't always hear back when people try new(er) products, so I'm sure glad you logged back in to spread the news!

$170 is glass installed. $300 is Optic Armor windshield without installation.

When I purchased mine, their website said scratch resistant. The site now says highly scratch resistant. After owning it for a few years I know for a fact that it's not scratch resistant at all. You can clearly see where my wipers run across it and it has scratches all over.
