Us poor 'X' owners don't have the wiring in the dash for an auto-dimming mirror with compass and temperature, so here is how I did mine. I presume SE models are the same. Even though there is no harness for connecting a mirror there is the harness for connecting a temperature sensor.
Ingredients:
- 22AWG stranded wiring in seven different colors, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TFF9FTM/?tag=wranglerorg-20
- male and female seven pin/cavity JST-SM connectors. I bought a set e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTKD7P4/?tag=wranglerorg-20
- Gentex-453 from ebay with double DIN display and pigtail $65 - "GENTEX-453 2006-07 PATHFINDER REAR VIEW MIRROR AUTO DIM HOMELINK COMPASS TEMP"
- POSI-TAP connectors, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MPW54G/?tag=wranglerorg-20
- Wire loom tape, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KGHHTY5/?tag=wranglerorg-20
- Suitable ambient temperature sensor (see below)
There are two different versions of the Gentex-453, green display and orange display. My understanding is that green = Nissan and orange = Toyota. It is also my understanding that the Nissan version only works with Nissan temperature sensors. I bought a green display version and therefore I needed a Nissan ambient temperature sensor. I went to the local self-service junkyard and pulled one (with pigtail) from behind the bumper of a 2006 Nissan Altima. $13.
Here is what is printed on the back of the mirror I purchased.
First we need to make the missing part of the body harness that goes in the dash and Sport/Rubicon owners already have. Here is the wiring diagram. The bottom-left part of the diagram for the temperature sensor is already in the vehicle and is included just for reference.
I forgot to measure the length but it needs to go from the outside of the driver's footwell to the passenger's A-pillar and then back in about six inches. I think the total length was around 60 inches.
Here is the completed harness using the male JST-SM connector.
Spliced into the body wiring harness in the driver's footwell using POSI-TAP connectors.
Routed to under the defrost vent.
The next step is to make the harness that goes from the dash, up the passenger's A-pillar and over to the mirror. This needs to be around 73 inches long and uses the pigtail that came with the mirror. Here is the wiring diagram.
Because it is easy to break into a Wrangler with a soft top I wired it so that Homelink is only powered when the ignition is turned on. If you don't want that then connect pin 10 on the mirror to pin 7 on the dash harness.
The pinout for the mirror:
Hopefully the pigtail you have matches these.
Here is a picture of the completed harness connected to a pigtail which has the temperature sensor and a 12V bench power supply attached so I could test it before installing.
The Nissan temperature sensor connector does not match the factory connector in front of the radiator/AC condenser so I used two POSTI-TAP connectors to attach it. The sensor is just a resistor so it doesn't matter which wire goes to which.
Routing the wiring.
