Auto Dimming Mirror / Compass / Temp Wiring

I understand that some TJs were built with pre-wiring even if they didn't come with the option. I have to look under the defrost vent to see if mine has it. However I am confused as to whether the pre-wiring is Mopar part 56047087AC or if that part is needed regardless of the pre-wiring?

I.e. can the pre-wiring be pulled up and extended up the A-pillar to the mirror, or is that the purpose of 56047087AC?

Am I right in understanding that the Gentex 221 (GNTX-221) is plug-and-play with the factory wiring and that the Gentex 177 needs some simple wiring modifications?

Even if you have the harness under the vent, you will still need the harness that goes up the window to the mirror.
Not sure of the part numbers.
Also, not sure if any mirror other than Mopar is plug-n-play.

I had the prewired harness under the defrost vent, but with only the standard rearview mirror. I got a used auto-dimming/compass/temp mirror (with the necessary additional wiring harness) from Davey's Jeeps. Don't remember what I paid, but I thought it was not unreasonable at the time, and it is still working perfectly several years later.

it's a GTMX mirror...I was able to find the factory wire kit up the pillar years ago...theres half a dozen used kits on Ebay in the 250. range

Thanks for the replies. Seems I can get a junkyard GTMX mirror and then make up my own harness. I just need to decipher the wiring diagrams in the factory service manual to understand which connector shown in there is the white dash connector. Not much luck so far. :/

Looking at the wiring diagrams for 2006 all the mirror wiring goes through connector C203.

But this connector is marked as green, not white?

F505 = run/start
Z1 = ground
L1 = backup lamp
G231 = ambient air temperature
G32 = temp sensor ground
M22 = courtesy lamps driver
M21 = fused battery supply

There is also shown a black connector:

which has an identical pinout. However I think here there is a mistake in the FSM. G231 is the ambient air temp for the mirror and G31 is the other air temp sensor for the engine, so the black connector should read G231 not G31.

So it seems all I need to do is buy a GMTX mirror, open it up to read the pinout from the circuit board, then make up a wiring harness to match this pinout and run it around the windscreen?

Plus get a temp sensor from the junkyard and make a bracket for it?

Here's mine (2005). Pin 7 at the bottom. Colors are close to the FSM, but not absolutely perfect.

On the right, the second wire down from the top looks green/gray in this picture, but in another picture it looks black. Must be a reflection of the sky or something.

Yes,this is a MUST have for any off-road vehicle.but this is a great company (it gives you all that you need for for 125 bucks),but just so you know,I’ve had trouble with their harness,so when you get the kit from them go ahead and do yourself a favor and redo all of there cheesy butt connections with soldier and shrink tape.

Go to your local junk yard and grab a mirror and the seven pin connector out of a 1995-2002 GM K truck. I think I paid $40 buck for it. Took me about 15 minutes to make a harness. You do need to purchase a OAT sensor.

The particular mirror you'll need to locate came on multiple GM models in different versions but the one your looking for is the 7 pin model most commonly found from 1995-2002 in Chevy and GMC trucks and full size SUV's also known as Gentex model number GNTX-177.

I already know where I’m going to hook in power and the trigger wire for the map lights. I was curious if you could help point me to where I can tie into the already existing wires that run out to the grill for the temp sensor. Even though mine doesn’t have the connector under the dash for the mirror it does still have the temp sensor wires running out to the grill on the driver side. Thank you!
