Bad motor mount issue on driver side

Hope fully you get this worked out without too much trouble.

I wanted to type something else about who and how it got the way it is now but I don't want to put down any rednecks, hillbillies or even trailer trash with that ugly thing. I will admit that I'm picturing a severe lack of teeth and maybe a canoe and I can hear a banjo or two.

Close enough.....Alabama lol.....theres plenty of redneck mechanic'n going on here lol. Everytime I go to my brothers shop hes trying to fix someone's handiwork that is falling apart and costing them 5x more than if they'd have done it right to start. LoL

What worries me about extracting bolts is I've always heard it's easy for cast to crack and/or break off in chunks. Has me wondering if I want to try to extract them or just install the BD mount and use all the free holes I can with it. (It says it has 8 bolt locations)

You could weld a nut to the remnants of the broken bolt and see if that will assist in its removal.
Otherwise.... Just use the BD mount to create a stronger mounting point.
I would suggest you check the bolts on the other side of the engine; just to make sure the bolts aren't loose or stripped.

Yeah....hopefully they are okay, but like you said, I think I'll verify the passenger side.

I think that snapped bottom bolt is actually deeper than the surface....pretty sure none of it sticks out.
 
Well I've got a update! Looks like the bolts snapped and since the holes are in small casted 'studs' it looks like they snapped those block studs off trying to extract the bolts.....I'm ordering that Brown Dog mount

So you know, everyone with a welder and nearby Home Depot is a fabricator. I suppose it's that THAT bad....had they used thicker metal and added bracing it may have worked.

Does anyone else sell these upgraded mounts? I wont get one from Brown Dog for about a month. I realllly need it faster than that if at all possible.

I saw that one but it says 2000-2006 and I've got a 99.....not sure the difference between 99 to 2000 but maybe I could modify it or something.

The Brown Dog says 1991-1999 so there must be some kind of change that took place from 99 to 2000.

I think I'm going to weld up this broken bracket that was on my Jeep....it had broke at a weld. I can use it for a month or so until the BD arrives. It should be fine, it's been on the Jeep since before I bought it 2yrs ago.
 
IF I were you I would contact MORE and ask them what the difference is and IF their mount can be modified.
It may be as easy as drilling a new hole or notching the mount.
 
I don’t know if it’s been suggested, but go for the rubber bushings if you have the option. Less chance of vibrations.

I had my two oldest boys up on top of a mountain at the beginning of August heading off to do some backpacking when about 3/4 mile from the trail head the passenger side mount snapped off at the block. The engine fell over and pushed the exhaust pipe into the front driveline. The kicker was that I had seen a polished ring around the driveline when I bought the Jeep and was puzzling over what had made it. It all became clear in that moment; so this had happened before. I think I had been driving around on one bolt in the mount to the block for a year and it finally gave up after 10 miles of washboard. I used a borrowed ratchet strap to limp the rest of the way to the trailhead and left it for the night. We just got it back yesterday from the shop that towed it out. He confirmed that it looked like two of the bolts had been broken for a while. I guess I too wonder how common breakages of this nature are and what can be done to stay ahead of the problem short of just going to Brown Dog or the like.

There have been quite a few cases of members on NAXJA over the years when I owned an XJ where the passenger side mount had broken. One member in particular I lent him my AAA Premiere membership to have his Jeep towed to his house 100 miles away. The block was resting on the distributor which kept the engine from tipping further to the passenger side.

bolts don't break when they are properly torqued, unless they are heavily corroded.
