Changing differential oil

After Installing and breaking in for 500 miles a new ring and pinion, do you change out your Differential oil?
Yukon gear and axle recommends to do that.
just wondering if it’s a good thing to do.?

Absolutely good thing to do. You'll get the lapped shavings out of there. I recommend spending $30-40 bucks and getting lube locker gaskets for the fresh fluid. You wont have to wait for any RTV dry time.

Metal particles and the phosphate coating from new gears should be drained out. It also gives you an opportunity to inspect the gears for abnormal wear.

And the lube lockers are reusable. Admittedly I only reuse them a couple times max. I like them because there is no cleaning of rtv when taking things apart, and quicker assembly.

I found this Y broken while changing out my gas tank skid. It seems to be just a pass through Y. No valves in it.

I just switched from regular 80/90 gear oil to the 85/140. Hot as Hades here and I tow a small trailer occasionally. I had to break a 45 year habit of using 80/90.

Did you use it in both diffs or just the rear? I always wonder if you should use it in both.

I just did. It is extremely hot here so it is not a typical operating environment. I assume it will be okay. If I was in Vermont, I'd probably revert to 80/90.
