Chasing 231J leaks

Here's another perspective and why I don't think this ring goes on the sun gear shaft...this is how things sit sans ring.

With the ring in the closest to transmission point the sun gear is an 1/8" out of the annulus.

With the ring in that middle position it's an inch out of the annulus.

I don't think the ring belongs here.

I think this is a problem relating to mixing and matching early and late parts in the front case half. The snap ring has to go in that slot closest to the transmission. It definitely can’t go in the slot by the shoulder, because the bearing butts up against that.

This picture perfectly shows why the ring goes where it goes.

If putting the ring in the correct spot has the planetaries not riding in the annulus, then it’s likely a case depth problem caused by the mixing and matching of late parts in the early case.

You were right...the snap ring goes under the seal cover on the front.

Uploading a video but my Internet is slow.

Didn’t realize you were trying to install the snap ring before inserting the input into the bearing. I can see the confusion now - yes, definitely won’t work.

This was why I said to just remove the front cover and see if the snap ring was there ;)

I think we need to just do a zoom or something at this point. You and macho can wrench out while the rest of us point and laugh and offer up hare brained suggestions.

Shit I've seen your Jeep fall apart...you need those more than I do!

There's trust falls and there's friends you trust to hold on to the brake when you crawl under their Jeep and manually jam it into drive...

-Mac

Now you're spreading falsehoods..... My Jeep didn't fall apart.... I drove it off the trail. Might have had to manually shift it but it was running & driving.

Some of the damage was my screwups too... It's what I get for not double/triple/quadruple checking the O2 sensor wiring to make sure I'd zip-tied them up so they couldn't get melted...

And I offered to crawl under while you held the brake.
