Clutch decompressed sound

Hello all,

I noticed this sound only when the clutch is out (decompressed) and in neutral. Any ideas or is it normal? I’m only asking because a mechanic told me it was the throw out bearing and I’m not convinced. Video attached

Haha yeah dog the laces… the sound is a spinning sound whenever the clutch is out. I can’t tell where it’s coming from. I’ll have to record again when the sound is louder. Thanks

That's normal for the NV3550 trans IMO. All of mine have sounded like that and my clutch is fairly new (25,000 miles) on this Jeep.

I have the same.

Research tells me if it is the throw out bearing the chattering sound is heard with the clutch is depressed, not when it is released. I understand the sound we are hearing is the input shaft bearing, and while a little annoying, it’s fairly normal and very common.

we just bought a 06 rubi 6 speed and when it got warmed up it would make a grinding noise when it sat with the clutch out. it would get quiet as soon as any pressure was put on the pedal, but PO said he'd recently replaced the throw out bearing. pulled trans and it had the plastic throw out bearing, replaced with a LUK clutch kit with metal TO bearing and its quiet now !

Different trans and LUK metal vs composite TOB is a non-issue. Call LUK and find out for yourself. Metal fail just as often, they just do more damage when they do. I've had two or three 6 speeds and none of them made that noise, so you were smart.
p.s. Peace of mind means a lot though. I replaced a Dana 35 years ago, just because of horror stories on these forums. Bashed it for 2 years with 35s with no issues prior. Every time I hopped the rear end, I waited for it to snap. Never did, but it stressed me out. Jeep forums are like women, they're a blessing and a curse.

There are many threads on this topic, all ending in the same conclusion: it's normal. The input shaft spinning the bearings. The NV3550 is a noisy transmission an the TJ has no sound proofing. You can quiet it up a little by using Redline MTL, but only a little.
