I recently replaced my ODPA a couple of months ago with the Crown unit as I started to get the laughing monkey noises on startup. Replaced it immediately when I first started to hear the noise.

My mechanic, who I trust, did the replacement for me, as I did not physically have the time to get to it.

I asked them to try to preserve the OEM camshaft position sensor for the old ODPA. Sadly he said the sensor has seized itself in the old unit. He used all the tricks of the trade trying to retrieve it, including letting it soak almost all day in PB Blaster. In the end he wound up breaking the sensor trying to remove it.

So we installed a new Mopar sensor into the crown unit and all was well.

Have been driving on it a couple months with no issues.

As it has started to cool here in GA (couple of mid 40s mornings), I started getting a CEL (P0340) on initial startup. Usually started just fine, but did have one hard start one cold morning. Jeep ran fine, but was in limp mode (no greater than 2400 rpm). After things warmed up the code cleared itself. I also have a scanner tool and was able to clear the code after things warmed up. Jeep would run fine the rest of the day.

So I decided to try the sensor that came with the crown unit. Popped it in, had an even colder morning in the mountains. No CEL on startup and no issues since.

Wondering if anyone has experienced the same. I know the Mopar sensors are always preferable, but I have read a few posts about the new sensors not being what they used to be. Have also read that some have cleared things up by adjusting the air gap from the tone wheel by using very thin washers.

Would love to run the Mopar sensor, but as of now, the Crown one seems to be running without issue compared to the Mopar one. How long that lasts, who knows.

Any thoughts?

If it's working, I don't see why you'd change it. However it is probably worth keeping a spare around and maybe searching for an original on a junk yard, if you can find one. working > not working :)

I installed mine with the crown unit first, chamged to oem a few month later, the only difference maybe a smoother idle, but maybe just a placebo effect.

I installed the crown OPDA unit as it was shipped to me two years ago and no problems yet.Two trips to Colorado to play in the hi country. Trip from Texas to the mountains is about 800 miles and i pull a small light weight camp trailer.2006 tj with auto transmission.Happy with the results,

I called and talked Crown when I replaced my OPDA with a Crown unit. The person I spoke to recommended I use the original crank sensor and throw away the one that came with OPDA. I then asked why even put one on it? I got a "well, we want to sell a complete unit". I then asked why does Crown make a sensor that doesn't work ...I got a moment of silence as an answer to that question!

Maybe Crown took my ingenuous advice and started making sensors that work?

Once my tj had a surge, i was all day running errand. After the surge a cel triggered from the cam sensor, it went to limp mode. After that i shut down It down and started her back up and it wasn't in limp mode anymore. The cell went shortly after that.

So far, so good with the sensor that came with the crown replacement OPDA. No codes thrown, running fine. Have the mopar one in the console along with a wrench in case I need to swap it out if the Crown one fails.

The only thing I noticed when I swapped them out is that the mopar one was a looser fit in the housing. Slid right out. The Crown one was a much tighter fit when seating it in the housing.
