Dana 30, Revolution 4.10, Trutrac
.008" backlash (revolution: 6-10 thou)
pinion preload ~13 in-lbs (revolution: 12-15 in-lb) preload is a little different in one direction over the other with the setup bearings.
.0664" pinion depth (recc starting depth .065")

Using setup carrier/pinion bearings and setup pinion race that I made. Thinned the gear compound a bit with the gear oil.

What do you think? Thank you!

Try thinning your marking paint with a little gear oil. it does look shallow to my inexperienced eyes, so maybe set the pinion a little deeper and see where it puts your pattern before you change side shims. One adjustment at a time.

After adding the 10 thou:

Pinion depth: .07715"
Backlash: .006"
Pinion preload: ~14 in-lbs avg.
Looking way more centered that before :)

What do you think?

Great! Now we have seen too shallow as well as too deep. You desired pattern is somewhere in between the first and second pattern you have posted. Make sure you write those numbers down so you know what your goal posts are.

Let's subtract 5 thou and see what you get. It's all easy from here 😁

Edit: Don't forget to add a pic of the drive side too next time.

Thanks! I had uploaded the same pic twice before. It should show the drive and coast sides now. Ill subtract 5 thou and see how it looks.

Subtracted 5 thou on the pinion and readjusted the backlash:
backlash: .007"
preload : ~14 in-lbs
depth: .07085"

I was looking n my phone earlier but couldn't see it well enough to comment. I noticed in your very first post that you have the marking compound thinned out which is good. However, you applied too much. It was still show as shallow, but now that I'm looking at this latest post, I can see a harsh line but it's caused by using too much marking compound. Can you clean the ring gear teeth and apply only enough to make it turn yellow. Wipe off any excess. Apply a good amount of pressure when turning the ring gear too. I think that will help clean this pattern up for a good reading.

Here is the same setup specs but with way less marking compound. I took the pics with a flash to help the patterns stick out. Thank you for your help.

I've never seen revolution give such a crappy pattern. I think you are very close but I don't like the jagged pattern. Do you have a combination that will let you add 1 or 2 thou?

I don’t at the moment but will order some more shims. Going to try out a crush sleeve eliminator for at least the setup so I have a more consistent preload.

I’m using setup bearings from my used bearings (200k miles) that have some pitting. The carrier/pinion went through Revolutions rem finishing process. I’ll post new patterns once I add 2 thou and steady up the preload with the eliminator.

You're going to be chasing your tail with used bearings for setup. As far a pinion pre-load, you don't need to establish that until after pinion depth is established. Just tighten the pinion nut until you get drag.

ECGS sells pre-machined setup bearings / pinion race, if you're gonna go buy new bearings anyways...

I could be wrong, but I didnt think there was an actual crush sleeve eliminator kit for a tj dana 30, just the JK 30. Make sure its for the right housing before you buy it.

I bought ecgs setup bearings/races 2-3 yrs ago (before I had all my own tools). You can build your own setup bearings in 5 minutes and skip the 2x upcharge. I am happy to walk you through how to do it.

Thanks! I made setup bearings and used some other old bearings for the inner race as the press tool like @hosejockey61. You are correct with the CSE for the TJ dana 30; Ill prob skip it on the Dana 35.

@hosejockey61 Here is the new pattern with the fresh bearings, backlash of .006"; pinion depth .0673" (took your advice to add a few thou from the .065" recc starting point...) As always, thank you.

Just curious - what device are you using which measures pinion depth to 1/100,000”?

Slightly deep. Subtract 3 thou
