Dana 30 upgrade / weak point

As per my initial post, the short answer is cost. Admittedly I have not had quotes from all possible suppliers, but the one I did get a number from suggested it would be about $10,000 to ship a front and rear axle. Then I have to pay c. 25% import taxes on the cost of the axles and the shipping. Starts to get a bit pricey.

For that ship it over to the states, upgrade it, go on an epic wheeling trip and take it home.

That sounds like an FU price to me.

Thanks for the link. I suspect it is not a FU price so much as a 'for the sake of just two axles we are just going to ask FedEx what they will charge to air freight it' price. Which is fair enough. I think it is worth me looking at getting stuff shipped internally in the US and consolidated into a container, it may even be possible to split the cost with others in the UK looking to bring stuff over who aren't in a desperate hurry.

Under services they have an auto parts tab but it doesn't go anywhere. Might be worth a call to see what you're up against.

That's a great idea, as long as I can find somebody to work on a RHD and nobody notices the upgrades when I ship it back 😉

I never understood the VAT tax on your side of the pond. I know when I was looking at Rimmer bothers for parts on my TR6 I had to back that tax out.

No reason to ship anything. Save your money. The Dana 30 is up to 35’s with Chromoly shafts and Spicer 5-760x u joints.

That's why we're going wheeling... sufficient mud should do the trick. And they won't be bright shiny parts!

That is very odd pricing for a TEU. While we are getting notices that prices are coming down, in the last 3 years it went from about 1800 to 2000 for a TEU up to over 20 grand at the peak.

The better way to ship stuff like that is find a business in the UK that gets container loads from US suppliers several times a year and have the crated axles shipped to or dropped off to them. There are more than a few that do that.

The JK 44 is not that great when you try to put larger than 35" tires on it. For 35's, it would be a stellar swap for you. Especially if you can tweak a few things to tune it up...

Well, the best laid plans of mice and men...
Have been speaking to people about sourcing JK Rubicon axles in the UK, none of the breakers I spoke to could recall ever seeing any. Finally spoke to a guy who swapped some into his non-Rubicon JK, he said it took him years to get hold of a set. After that I did some more digging, it seems Jeep did little if anything to market the Rubicom version of the JK in the UK, from what I can see it seems the result of that is that only about 130 were sold in the UK during the entire production run. Chances of my finding used JK Rubicon axles seems pretty slim 😢

Key bit of info I overlooked is during my research, I only found one locker that would work with the 30 spline Rubi 44 shafts out of the TJ which is the stock JK Rubi 44 e-locker. I say that in hopes someone will come along and correct me with some other versions that will work.

If it helps, I have a new OEM JK e-locker I bought for the project that I am unlikely to use now if you find yourself in need.

I still keep coming back to the possibility of JK axles, but just reread this post. I had a relatively quick look and as far as I can see only OEM lockers fit in the JK Rubicon dana 44s, is that in line with what you found? Or is it an option to switch to shafts with a different spline count and use after market lockers?

I'm hoping somebody can answer a very basic JK axle related question, as I am getting contradictory info from my searches. Is it correct that the ring gear in a Dana 44 in the rear of a JK (all variants) is 8.8" in diameter and in a Dana 44 in the front of a JK Rubicon is 8.5"?

I believe that’s correct, yes.

That is pretty much what I found and I keep hoping someone will correct me but there again, if they don't, then you don't need custom inner shafts. That and 30 spline alloy shafts are more than strong enough for 35's and rarely strong enough for 37's if you play hard.

Thanks for the confirmation. Really confused me as when I looked at Yukon they list the front and rear Dana 44s at 8.8", then I looked at Revolution and they list both front and rear Dana 44s at 8.5" 🤯
