Dana 35 Pinion Torque to Rotating Assembly

Hi everyone,

My name is Sophia & I'm new here. Putting 4.56 gears in my 1998 Tj. Dana 30 front/Dana 35 rear. Did a lot of searching online, but not much info about this. Does anyone know what the carrier bearing shim preload should be? A lot of sites reference a Dana 35 "JL", however most of the AMC M35 values seem to be more applicable. I can't find anything that specifies Dana 35 without also saying "JL".

It should be tight enough that you can't pull the carrier out by hand. Should take about 6-8 whacks with a deadblow hammer to get it in. Go to the 20:20 point in the video...

Do you happen to know if the Dana 35 JL is what I'm supposed to be using for reference? "JL" is what is throwing me off- I have a paper with those specs and was unsure. With the gear change kit I ordered, they told me I needed an M35 one.

No, the JL is the latest version of Jeep. That video and others on my channel are good references for setting gears. If you've never done this before and it's your daily driver, I strongly caution you to be prepared that it will take longer than you think. Do a TON of research before you even think about starting. The consequences for a poorly set up gear set can be both catastrophic to your axle as well as your wallet!

That makes sense. Still trying to figure out what the PTTR is though for the rear lol. I've already completed the Dana 30, there were a lot more resources on that one. Thanks

It's all very similar when setting gears. Set your pinion preload to 16-20 in lbs.

I think you're mixing up the JL PTTR with the Dana 35. The JL does have a PTTR spec that is done with the carrier installed. With your Dana 35, just set the pinion preload to 16-20 in lbs (no carrier installed) and you'll be good.
